I think it's time to rename this thread: '(not) reopening to anyone
Finance Minister Israel Katz tells Channel 12 of the expected opening of much of the economy next week: “This will be the last opening. There will be no more lockdowns… It’s going to open for good.

He says: “We will be the first country in the world to return to controlled activity,” apparently referring to countries that have been closed down by the pandemic.

Katz says he backs a gradual opening in two main stages, one next week and another in early March.

Thanks, any thoughts if that could change next week if airport does open?
All speculation obviously, but if I had to guess I'd say it will get easier to get approval gradually, but the framework won't change until around March 1, at which point I think it may become significantly more open including work permits and etc, and I wouldn't be surprised if all foreigners are allowed in before the 3/20 elections (perhaps with a choose-your-own-hotel quarantine model).

What exactly is the difference? In effect they both limit capacity. Australia allows the airlines to charge as much as they want, so the limited capacity goes to the highest bidders and there are hundreds of thousands of people waiting to go back. Israel limits the airline prices so it goes to whoever is lucky enough to snatch it as opposed to whoever has $$$

Do you still think there is no difference?

The government is a problem, the committee definitely requires מלקין אותו עד שיאמר רוצה אני. And if they simply can't handle it, I am sure they could scream loud enough to make a change.

I'm fairly well informed, having dealt extensively with both systems. Do you want me to make a list of differences?

My point was you were pretending Australia doesn't have stranded passengers, when in reality even though their system was more predictable, they had many more stranded citizens, and their system was less fair to people who couldn't afford to pay very high prices for flights that in effect went to the highest bidder and AU$3000 for quarantine.

I never said Australia's system is perfect, but at least it is more predictable and less chaotic, and people don't have to wait for flights to be announced and a stampede to get onto them.

Case in point: I know someone who was granted authorization to travel out of Australia on humanitarian grounds. That person was able to fly to TLV via DOH or DXB and ATH or LCA (I don't remember the exact route at the moment) and was able to fly back via EWR and LAX (chose to take that route due to flight schedule of UA being more reliable and consistent).

At this point one cannot make a RT booking to TLV with any level of certainty or predictability.

A relative living in Israel would like to come to the US for Pesach.

She has both Israeli and UK citizenship.

Any reason to think she would have any issues leaving Israel, entering USA?

What about quarantining on her return to Israel? (She is fully vaccinated if that makes a difference)

Also she would need to either get a visa to come to USA as an Israeli or renew her UK passport. Which of those would be easier accomplished in Israel these days?

(if this is the wrong board for this please direct me to the correct place to ask this)

YES. If she would try to leave today, she would probably be denied. What will happen in the future is anyone's guess.

Here again, if the travel were today, then quarantine wouldn't be the question, she would simply be denied boarding onto a flight to TLV without special permission which isn't likely to be granted. Supposedly vaccination allows one to avoid quarantine, but then again, we're talking about Israel, and we're talking about COVID-19 - anything is subject to change.

I'm trying to be creative and understand what would be the trigger for the government to reopen BGI..

When we reach herd immunity? We have a long way to go.
When they find a way to enforce quarantine? (Yeah right)
When 100% of the 60+ are vaccinated??
When they decide that the vaccine is efficient against the main variants?

trigger will be the exact moment that whoever decides is convinced that he will receive more votes for opening it than for keeping it closed
