Open vs closed. Humidity level.
which one you want under what circumstances, I don't know.
Does it have anything to do with temperature and freezing your food, I don't know.
good luck  :D

Anyone know what the sliding piece here does other then the obvious that I can see - sliding it opens or closes a tiny vent. The question is, what makes it colder vs. not? I'm seeing that the things inside these draws are starting to freeze, I haven't done anything different since I got the fridge and I'm now wondering if one or both of these tabs were moved. I have not really paid attention to them since I don't store fruits/veg exclusively in either draw.

What make and model fridge and freezer do you have?

That tab shouldn't have anything to do with freezing.
Is it just in the bucket that items are freezing or other items in the fridge as well?
Any ice buildup in the freezer?
On the very top shelf where the fan is, is there something blocking over there?
From the picture you posted seems like a Maytag/whirlpool?

That's top has to be clear in the center to avoid freezing in the fridge.
