Dust allergies
« on: September 27, 2023, 10:14:52 PM »
DW wore something today that was sitting in the closet for a some time. Apparently it was a bit dusty, and apparently she’s allergic to such dust.

Question at hand is what to do to the rest of the clothing in the closet. Would be very expensive to send everything to the cleaners. Any ideas how to de-dust clothing effectively?

I actually am allergic to dust mites. An allergist prescribed Odactra, but it contains fish gelatin, and after consulting with my LOR it was determined that I can't continue that treatment (I could get allergy shots to get the same results, with a lot more inconvenience).

As for treating clothes, I would guess vacuuming, and possibly running through one or more dryer cycle (low, or no heat).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

+1 (on the guess)
I am allergic to dust [mites], too. When using dusty clothes comes up, we usually do a full wash (with detergent), and test it on my skin. It's good about half the time, otherwise we run it through another wash and then it is fine. (We don't have a dryer.)

The Mishna in Bava Metzia suggests shaking the clothes every 30 days.

(We don't have a dryer.)

Hang drying (especially outdoors) is susceptible to picking up allergens in the process.

I heard once that running an air purifier might help.
