Remote Work - Is This The Future?
« on: May 13, 2020, 10:57:58 AM »
Can't believe I haven't seen a thread about this.

Now that millions of people are working from home some companies are saying that it's not such a bad idea. The companies are saving on rent so as long as the work is productive, why not?

Twitter has already announced that they will allow their workers to work from home forever.

Shares of companies like SLG (commercial / offices landlords) are down substantially.

Some analysts are saying that NYC office buildings may find it self with skyrocketing vacancies.

Is this the future? Or will things go back to usual once covid is over?

Think about how much more work you can put in if you don't have to travel back and forth to work.

I gave up my office years ago and spent some of the savings at optimizing my home office and pocketed the difference. My commute was just 20 minutes RT, but that's still more than 0.

As for big companies, it's been trending that way, but it definitely may accelerate now.

Many industries will change.

Telemedicine will likely skyrocket from now on.

Many lawyers will want to do depositions via video, as they have been for months now.

Will kids ever get off for snow days anymore, or will it now be zoom days?

I am sure many other industries and professions will be changed forever.

I think people are overdoing the new normal. I personally have been going to my office every day since Pesach. When I started going there was no one else here now basically every office is full.

There are legitimate counter arguments, such as ability to physically monitor employees, productivity, the benefits of collocation, affects on the workplace culture and relationships.

Really depends on the industry, company culture, and people's living arrangement. Some (like the company that I work for) find that they do better with in-person collaboration and lots of face-to-face meetings. And some people have kids at home or just don't have a good space to work in. Condo/apt sizes have only been shrinking (at least here in YYZ), so in big cities a lot of people have less living space than ever.

Some analysts are saying that NYC office buildings may find it self with skyrocketing vacancies.
I've heard this, but I've also heard some saying that some companies will need more space to give employees a bit more distance between each other., which could add demand to office markets.

Another point: a lot of people have been doing this for a couple months now after never having had the opportunity to work at home. They might find it nice right now, but think about how one might feel once they've been working at home for years. Some might go nuts at some point.

While the fact is true that right now telemedicine is skyrocketing, however speak to any doctor and they will tell you that they don't love it, one of the major reasons being that the appointment's take double the time, while they may enjoy it now because they would have no business otherwise, when this is all over I believe a lot of doctors will go back and only offer in office appointments.

OTOH if workplaces offer the option, some may choose to go to the office some days and stay home other days.

Anything requiring collaboration becomes very dependent on peoples ability to collaborate by conference. Those skills are nowhere close to universal.

I work in the Miami office of a global NYC-based law firm. I work mostly with colleagues in the NYC office and very few of my clients are even in Florida, so even before this hit, the Miami office was mostly a "remote" location from my perspective and I worked from home at least one day a week. In the pre-Covid era, I used to work out of WeWork spaces in Toronto when visiting family there and no one at the firm knew the difference. Frankly, many of the "culture" things that people point to in the centralized physical office (e.g. colleagues popping in to chat or socialize) are fine in moderation but on a full-time basis distract me from getting deep work done.

I think having a shared space that folks can get into, as needed, to collaborate, establish a routine, or get away from home-distractions will remain important post-Covid, but this has definitely been a light-bulb experience to many senior partners who previously swore by the face-time model.

There are legitimate counter arguments, such as ability to physically monitor employees.
Consider If employees' work (and for fair comparison, we're talking about the types of jobs that could be done remotely vs. stocking a warehouse etc.) is boring to the point that employees can't be trusted to perform remotely without employer monitoring, they probably can't be trusted in the office either. Plenty workers in boring jobs waste away hours in the physical office.

I recomend two resources on point:

The book "Remote": https://www.amazon.com/Remote-Office-Required-Jason-Fried/dp/0804137501

Great Hidden Brain podcast on "BS" jobs https://www.npr.org/2018/08/28/642706138/bs-jobs-how-meaningless-work-wears-us-down
