Why turkey on Thanksgiving?
« on: November 23, 2011, 12:20:41 PM »
I never thought of this, but I just saw on Huffington Post of all places.

Turkey in Hebrew is called Tarnegol Hodu, or Rooster of Thanks! Interesting?

even if that true, im pretty sure its the other way around
similar to the hebrew word for the measurement of time known as the second = shniya

but more likely hodu is referring to india

That is a bad analogy.  I am simply pointing out an interesting coincidence.  The poshet pshat is definitely India.

I'm pretty sure shniya was being used before English even existed.

(maybe not exactly as it's used now, but definitely in terms of degrees - minutes - seconds)

Because turkey is so dry so people don't like eating it year round, but we need to get rid of all the old ones.

(now please don't start telling me how your grandmother made a delicious one, you know it was dry after two minutes)

Just sayin
Reb avigdor miller z"l bans eating turkey today... I know Reb Moshe is "mattir" but that's only when you're at a party and can't resist

For the same reason- it's the second division of an hour (after minutes)

It's a Thanksgiving miracle! Me and @neveryou are on the same page about something!! The Great Pumpkin's wonders never cease.

Because turkey is so dry so people don't like eating it year round, but we need to get rid of all the old ones.

(now please don't start telling me how your grandmother made a delicious one, you know it was dry after two minutes)

Here's a sacrilegious tip: carve the turkey before making it. Put the white meat in a sous vide, and roast the dark meat in the oven. Sear it all before serving to get the crispiness right.
Failing at maintaining Lurker status.
