Looking for monitor advice
« on: May 14, 2020, 09:29:22 AM »
Looking to use up my $200 Dell credit. I can either get a free 24" FHD monitor, a 27" for $50, or a 27" LED for free.

Not a power user in any way; I am really just fine with my 15.6" Lenovo laptop, but I'll always take a free/dirt cheap monitor.

(Will go for the fancy mouse and keyboard in July IYH).

Thoughts?

A: Free > cheap  ;D

B: 27” feels very big, especially if you’re used to laptop screens or 20” monitors.

I'd go for the "27 if you have a normal (not crammed) office desk. The bigger a screen is the easier to work on it (coming from someone that works half day on a Surface Pro "12.3 screen and half day on a "28 screen...)

Unless you're going to end up with two, then I'd go with around 22-24"

Not my annual fee. A relative’s card.

Think 27” FHD is gonna be it.

That would wind up a lot more than $50.

Hi I'm looking for a 27 inch monitor. I read somewhere that if it doesn't have more pixels than a 24 inch it will just display the same as the 24 inch just in bigger but if it has more pixels it will display more. Is that true and how do I check if it has more pixels?
Thanks

Correct, the larger the monitor is the higher resolution you need. For a 27 inch monitor you'll likely be ok with FHD-1080, but QHD-1440 is the optimal resolution.

Thanks. So if I get fhd 1080 it's not going to just give me a bigger picture of what a 24 inch would show me? I'll actually have more on my screen than a 24 inch?

The typical 24 inch is also FHD (1080p) so regardless of the monitor size you will get the thing (screen real estate) on the screen just bigger. (That's obviously only true if you always leave the typical zoon to 100%. If on the 24 inch you'd zoom in so things are bigger, then on the 27 inch you won't need to zoom, so you'll end up with more.)

If you get a QHD (1440p) you'll have more pixels so you'll have more things on the screen.

I bought the portable monitor for "free" with the amex card from Dell https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/electronics/dell/dell-14-portable-monitor-269-99-215-99-242-99-amex-business-cards-just-15-99-42-99-business-platinum/

Can’t seem to get this to work with my HP laptop. Anyone aware of a workaround or something I could buy that would allow me to use this with my HP 15t-dy200 (also bought on sale from a dansdeals tip of course).

Thanks for any help!

lol, yes, i think so. it comes with a single c type cord which i connected but it says no type c-2 connection... It seems that perhaps my c port doesn't support this type of display (that's why I shared which computer I have, and I doubt I'm the only one running into this issue)? so I'm wondering if there is a workaround of any sorts, google has conflicting information.

"my HP laptop" isn't really telling which computer you have. If you can share the exact model, maybe someone can see in the specs.

:)
My bad.

The USB-C port on this laptop is certainly not a display output.

So the only possible workaround would be to find (if there is, I didn't find) an adapter from HDMI (the output the laptop has) to USB-C (with DisplayPort over USB-C support.)

So it seems I'm out of luck with this screen. Ok, I assume I need dell to issue a credit and not a refund?
