what is a good value for redeeming miles/flights
« on: November 23, 2011, 01:11:47 PM »
Please excuse my ignorance but I was wondering how much people look to redeem their miles for in reward travel.  For instance, I found a flight for $1100 or I could book it for 80,000 miles.  Is this a good rate? I would appreciate it if someone could share their insights with me so I can have this information for the future.  Thank you!

You need to be more specific. What kind of miles are these?

sorry, they are CO miles.

For some reference, Dan shoots for a redemption value of 1.9 for CO miles.

You'd be getting ~1.3.

Thanks. As far as other programs like Delta or American, what are some good valuations?

market value (reselling) at the moment for co miles are between 1.4-1.55- or at least those were the quotes i got last week from 5 buyers (although one told me that if the miles were transfered from mr then he is not interested)

Can someone explain why that would be?

Also, there is often times a large difference between what you can sell for and what you can redeem for (with the latter often being much more).

With the fact that Continental shut down over 80 accounts this summer from one buyer, because they had a couple of Amex transfers, and were really smelling bad, I could understand that.
