I’ve “been” to Both kinds of weddings and the videographer through YouTube was far superior. Also depends on what they show. One they showed some behind the scenes stuff like picture taking etc and I felt like I was there. Another they just set up the camera and it was boring watching people walk by and eating.

Thanks for all the responses

I think zoom is a really bad way to go. So much can go wrong and when it does, some random guest becomes the host.

I would appoint one of the guests as a co-host from the beginning.
Is there anything else wrong with Zoom?
How much worse is the quality?

Use youtube live, with the understanding that you will not be able to have people who are watching speak to you.

2 issues with YouTube live.
1. You need 1000 subscribers to broadcast live from a phone, which I am, as I don't have all the equipment.
2. Unless there is a big advantage over zoom, they would like the interactive aspect.

If you have a videographer, they should be able to set this up for you.

The videographer wants to charge though the roof, and they won't catch the behind the scenes stuff.

Thanks again for the responses!

Also, I would like to connect the band's music to the broadcast.
The best way I can think of is to have a computer connected to the mixer and then share computer audio on the zoom.
I can't think of how to do that if just doing YouTube live from a phone.

Also, any suggestions for catching the audio by the chuppah?
It's not going to be on the band's equipment. Is there any better way than to get up close or attach a Bluetooth headset to the mic/speaker?

Thanks!

Bumping this.
Looking to do a live stream for a friend's wedding this week, from beginning to end.
Is is possible to do something for under 500?
I have zero equipment
My recommendation is using a phone with a stabilizer. I tried everything.

Sounds like a good idea.
Any suggestions for a good but inexpensive stabilizer?
Thanks

For my friends wedding I had direct internet (I made my own 300ft ethernet cable) to my HP laptop with a $300 capture card connected via HDMI to my $1,000 DSLR with a RODE Mic. I used VMix software which lived streamed onto Zoom and YouTube. Image quality and sound was great. There was one big problem tho, I was stuck in a 20ft HDMI radius, and that problem was a pretty big one. People don't want to see a camera on a tripod, people want a walk around they'll get a better experience. For the next wedding I live streamed, I borrowed a friends YouTube account (you need 1,000 subscribers) and bought a $100 DJI stabilizer from Adoroma, connected my phone to a good router and boom it was a better experience for both the people watching it and for me walking around. I also bought an extender with a multi shoe mount from Amazon to attach a RODE mic and LED light to the DJI Stabilizer

The image quality is incomparable.
If your comparing image quality from a DSLR to any decent phone stream through YouTube, there is minimal to no difference at all. Streaming through Zoom, there's no question the quality on Zoom is degraded way past the phones quality. From my experience if you use good WiFi, streaming from a phone that is stabilized of course through YouTube would be a perfect match. I happen to have seen some decent streams through Vimeo but I can't recommend that.

Don't get me wrong, when I compare DLSR to phone camera, I'm specifically talking about the video quality since YouTube can only handle up to 1080p anyway. Obviously if you have a $2,000 zoom lense which will give a nice sharp bokeh affect, that might be a better option for you. Also if you have the money, you can get a few cameras with tripods, connect them to a hub with a capture card, and use VMix to switch through cameras during the stream.

-Yes I was referring to zoom vs YouTube not dslr vs phone.
-that setup sounds great
-Vimeo charges for certain functions
-If you do decide to use Zoom the only way yo improve image quality is to use an Enterprise account (only available to large companies- try borrowing one) paired with a laptop and DSLR even then you need to specifically request it from IT.

🤤 even better if you can do it wirelessly

I wouldn't bother with zoom imo, I would definitely try getting a YouTube account. There are other options though which I never tried but should be good, like Facebook, Vimeo, etc.

Thank you very much to everyone for all the info and suggestions. The wedding was tonight (Tuesday).

Ended up doing zoom, and it actually worked amazing because one of the immediate family members was stuck on another continent. I set up a big TV with a webcam (attached to a laptop,) (besides for a phone to move around), and it bridged the two sides amazingly!!! Friends on the other end made a celebration that family member, and in turn the screen became a focal point and "interactive" at times with proper dancing going on "together" in front of the screen. It joined them very nicely.
There were also other people on the zoom that were dancing in their location, and it was very nice to see that in the hall.
In the hall, there were people dancing and standing and waving in front of the screen throughout the evening. It had an amazing feel.
It was really unbelievable and really added a lot.

Picture quality was definitely low, but there wasn't necessarily reliable enough of a network that would have been able to  stream high quality smoothly, so I guess you gain some and lose some.

I used my phone with a stabilizer as well for the parts away from inside the hall, and as another angle in the hall. The stabilizer is really a game changer. I was able to be dancing and be holding the stabilizer to show close up in the middle of the circle, and it was still nice and smooth.

For the music on the zoom, I attached the audio from the mixer to an interface board and attached that to the laptop, so everyone on the zoom had beautiful sound, straight from the band.

Thanks again to everyone for the help!

(The wedding halls legit should provide something like this. A few stationary cameras and a couple roving cameras, all live streaming.)
