Don't you need a permit?
The very short answer is no. However, the government can place some restrictions. So if you want to use loudspeakers, block traffic etc. you do need a permit and it most certainly varies by jurisdiction.

There is obviously many details involved. What if the police barricaded a street, can I go off the sidewalk onto the roadway? I honestly don't know.

My main point was that generally speaking it's not up to the police to grant permission to assemble. It's a first amendment right.

I think we also need to remember these are not organized events.

How about sending in the military without the states asking for them?

Per Wikipedia

In 2006, Congress passed the 2007 National Defense Authorization Act, which gave the president the authority to mobilize National Guard units within the U.S. without the consent of state governors.[5][6]

How about his claim he can force the states to reopen?
How about his claim he has complete authority over everything?
There are many others but ne need to look them up as you get the picture.
He can send in the military without the states asking for it if the states have lost control (which they definitely have in NYC).

Lemon accused him of basically declaring war on America and becoming a dictator. If you agree with him then my earlier point of nothing trump could say will make you happy stands true no matter how many times you call it a lie.

Indeed.

He is noticeably Latino and has a ponytail, and generally dresses casually, so police may have overlooked his press credentials and (wrongly) assumed him to be a protester. Wrong, but just trying to make some sense in them arresting a journalist.

Correct but he is talking about the Military not the NG.

He can send the military as well without asking it was done by Detroit and LA riots, by multiple presidents.

I wouldn’t mind having the 101st to protect us over cops that get no protection from their bosses.

You might want to check on that. See if the governors didn't ask for the military?

Forgot what’s it called  google it he has to declare something and the governors don’t get a say.

Declaring that they can’t protect American citizens or something like that.

The Insurrection Act of 1807? Would be a massive legal battle.
