From what I read, my impression is that it's not significant enough to justify the suffering. Distancing will do more.

It was common practice to wear masks due to bad air quality. I've seen Asians in NY wear masks for years, I never really understood why, until we decided to try it to relieve my son's severe seasonal allergies .
