You had 8: in your copy/paste that was translated to 8: as an emoticon, so I added the [nobbc] tag to prevent the unintentional emoji translation

“Black August”? Really? Every death is sad but the situation  hardly merits this sort of hyperbole. We do need some context here. As long as numbers are not rising precipitously the hyper focus on daily numbers seems overdone. Last numbers I saw was one death in the 30-40 age group and 1 in the 40-50. The fatalities are overwhelmingly over the age of 80.

Israel has somewhere around 1000 deaths of flu each season with around 10 fatalities under the age of fifty.

Covid is not the flu. We saw that very clearly at the height of the pandemic. But so long as numbers are fairly stable it is unfortunate that there are elderly fatalities but it does not merit the hype and hyperfixation on each days numbers. Certainly any signs of surge are something to vigilantly keep an eye on, but things do need to be looked at in perspective.

Tell that to the people who’ve lost multiple senior family members this past year DTC. No offense but your response seems calloused to me. I don’t understand how the fact that these are seniors plays such a big role to you, it isn’t necessarily the case they’d pass away anytime soon of something else.

I agree with most of what you wrote, but keep in mind that these numbers are with efforts to combat the virus which we never see for the flu. The hyper focus on daily counts does serve a purpose, if we want to keep the cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from dwarfing what we see from the flu. The hyperbole does need to go, as does the publicizing of the worst case projections. Let's stick to reality.

To be fair, if the death rate from Covid is matching what we see from other diseases, there's no reason to oversensationalize the Covid deaths. That doesn't make it good or acceptable or something we shouldn't care about. Just be even-handed about it.

Those over 80 are often the canaries in the coal mine.

Back in spring 2020 the first deaths were in the elderly, but I would venture to guess that by the end of last year we all knew somebody in the 30-50 age groups who had died of covid.

The elderly got the vaccine first, so their immunity - usually weaker than in younger people - has worn off first.  It's possible that this is an early indicator of what will happen in the upcoming months, as immunity wanes for everyone else.  Not saying there will definitely be increasing deaths in the younger ages, but I think this is one reason that younger people might be watching the numbers with concern.

All valid points but the hyperbole is misplaced. Whatever gains are made by influencing people to take reasonable precautions will be lost if ch”v the situation truly turns dire and you have to communicate the urgency of the situation to a population whose sense of danger is dulled and jaded by months of unending hype. If you shriek at a toddler at the top of your lungs every time he steps in a puddle you will have a real problem when he ch”v steps in the path of a car.Chacham einav birosho.

Animals sense danger using their vision, hearing, or even feeling vibrations.  Humans rely more on intellectual evaluation of information.  Do you think the intelligence of people around you has become duller?
