What percent of the population is being tested daily? What is the percent positive? Without that data the numbers of confirmed per hundred thousand are not meaningful.

This chart is just plain silly. Enough with the hype.

If it needs to be spelled out I’ll do some quick back of the envelope math. Let’s take the US as a random example. The chart shows Israel has shockingly more cases per capita- more than double.

Now let’s look at the numbers. The US (population 328 million) conducted an average of 1.1 million tests or around 1/3 of 1% of its population. Israel (population 9 million) averaged 140,000 tests, 1.54% of its population or almost FIVE TIMES the number of tests per capita! In fact, the average positivity rate in the US is more than twice that of Israel. So yes, the above chart is MEANINGLESS.

It’s really time for folks to stop manipulating the numbers to create hype and suit the narrative.

This is also true. Also, Israel tests even more!! 48k rapid tests were done yesterday with a 2% positivity rate and it's not counted in the regular testing numbers.

I get your point and don't disagree on turning down the rhetoric. However, your back of the napkin math didn't make Israel's Covid situation seem any better. All it did was imply that the US is drastically undercounting cases because Trump was right - if we test less, we'll have fewer cases.

Of course. Even the best testing effort will only catch a fraction of the true number of positives. I wouldn’t be shocked if the true number of positives in Israel is multiples of the 10k they are showing, most probably asymptomatic. In fact, the lower the number of tests you run, the more those testing will tend to be symptomatic raising your percent positive to some degree.

If the US would run 4.5 million tests a day, the equivalent of Israel, the percent positive would definitely drop. That’s why per capita positive numbers provide almost zero context. Numbers tested, percent positive, hospitalizations, and critical, all broken down by age group and vaccination status are the only meaningful numbers to work with.
