The current state of COVID-19 in Israel
« on: June 05, 2020, 11:04:09 AM »
I see there is sentiment that COVID-19 is now out of control in Israel and headed to a massive outbreak. (I even received a message from a colleague in India that he received a notification(?) that 40 schools were closed in Israel and that the situation is worsening rapidly). There was even a (since deleted) vile post from someone here expressing happiness over the fact that the US closed down later than Israel, allowing the virus to spread, making it less dangerous in NY now so he can daven with a minyan (as if 20K dead in NY of which reportedly 2K are frum yidden is a worthy sacrifice so he can daven btzibur).

This could not be further from the truth. It is true that Israel had for most of May around 20 new cases per day. And then over the past week the numbers have grown to around 100-130 per day. This is indeed a concerning trend.
90 schools are closed - but this is truly out of an abundance of caution - the total number of cases from those 90 schools is below 500. And they have tested every person from those schools and placed all of them in quarantine. This does not represent a major outbreak - rather a proactive response to prevent a major outbreak.
Israel is more or less completely open - all stores and businesses are operating, obviously with distancing restrictions. Schools are all open. Shuls are open. Kollelim are functioning. IY'H this will continue and we will not see a broader outbreak.

Even just to compare to NY, there are still more daily new cases in NY (200-300 daily) vs. new cases in Israel. To think that NY is in better shape than Israel at this point is laughable.

I think the US should not let anyone from Israel enter the US now to prevent another outbreak since they have now 133 new cases yesterday, what do you think?

They are also performing triple the amount of tests daily, including meeny asymptomatic patients.  Positive results are still between .8% and 1% of tests taken.

Very well said, however to add a few points
1) There is no evidence that allowing the virus to spread made it less dangerous in NY
2) There are 4000 schools in Israel. 90 schools isn't a huge number.
3) Many countries that took the total lockout route waited for near total elimination, which it is now evident Israel did not, and that may have been mistaken. See Australia, NZ, Taiwan, HK, Thailand, & Vietnam.
4) There were many unnecessary glitches & irresponsibilities in Israel, although they've definitely far outperformed the US.

This is the most important point. It seems like you have to completely stomp out any community spread before you lift lockdowns if you are trying to crush the curve. If you can’t guarantee that there is no infected then you are running the possibility of one person infecting hundreds.

Israel took their foot off the gas in this fight a little too early.

1. I'm aware, I was only quoting stupidity
2. It's still 2.25% which obviously isn't huge, but isn't meaningless
3. I hear, but we don't know how long that would have taken, especially considering people were already starting to be lax with the rules, and anyways the borders aren't completely closed, with daily flights from NY, so we will always be imported some virus anyways
4. 100%

If the borders aren't truly closed, does this matter? Won't you anyways be importing virus.
Looks like Israel is going to be the guinea pig for test and trace. I hope we do it well.
Though, from what I'm hearing it takes 4-5 days to hear back on results from testing. That is unacceptable. They have to be able to do it faster

You’re right, and that’s why the US never stood a real chance against the virus. They simply can’t close down the borders.

Not necessarily with good quarantine.

Israel likes to claim they have a novel approach but they're just doing a lackluster job at following Korea.

In Canada the fine for breaking home quarantine is $1,000,000. In Israel it is 5000 NIS.

In a hospital on Friday I got results in under 3 hours. With the Rutgers saliva test last week I got results in a little more than 5 hours.

Isn't the number all educational institutions? Even gan age.
In which case there are 25000, which is 0.5%.

2.5 weeks later and this thread didn't age well. 459 new cases in the last 24 hours, we are on our way to a bad situation
New lockdowns in targeted areas across the country

Why do you say they aren't doing a good job? What would you have done differently?

I take that back, seems like most of the areas being locked down are charedi.
But there is no talk of locking down bnei brak

So enforcing rules of mask wearing and social distancing and saying that if there are 5(!) violations in a location then they will close down that location for 48 hours is "trying to shut down bnei brak"?
