A better and more objective comparison between the USA and Israel should come from looking at hospitalization data.  My back of the envelope numbers show close to 100,000 Americans hospitalized for a population of about 330MM vrs. Israel with about 1,100 hospitalized for about 9MM people.  That would be more than twice as many very sick Americans on a per-capita basis.  Does that make sense to anyone or am I missing something?

Makes sense, and one could possibly point to vaccination rates to explain it. Or we could blame it on the US being behind Israel on this wave (timing-wise).

Criteria for hospital admittance
Criteria for hospital discharge
Population and case demographics
Treatment protocols both pre- and during hospitalization, these affect outcomes and timelines

And likely other factors.

For example, Israel has more hospitalized per capita than the US, but when you take a look at ICU patients, Israel is under 200 on average while the US is over 25000, which is multiple times Israel per capita. Question is, what are the criteria? Are there financial incentives to identify incidental Covid positive patients in the icu for other reasons in either country? And so on.

It's more than just criteria. Fair to assume that many hispitalized Israelis avoided ICU by being vaccinated.

If that’s the case Israel is doing phenomenally better than the US and that fact ought to be highlighted rather than the misleading per capita positive numbers.  If it’s just differing criteria then the difference isn’t meaningful.

If the system is set up to incentivize it much more in Israel (and I remember reading a few months ago about a push in that direction) that could mean that the actual hospitalization data is skewed and not really as objectively representative of severe disease, as I thought.

Another factor which is causing the higher hospitalization rates in the US is that ER's are essentially the only place to get free healthcare.

One also needs to look at why the patient is hospitalized.  If someone is hospitalized for a totally unrelated reason, with no covid symptoms, and tests positive, why should that be counted in the hospitalization numbers?

 My daughter just gave birth, and was exposed in hospital.  According to the nurse, most of the cases they are finding in hospital (testing for various reasons, as well as random sampling) are in people who are fully vaccinated.

One also needs to look at why the patient is hospitalized.  If someone is hospitalized for a totally unrelated reason, with no covid symptoms, and tests positive, why should that be counted in the hospitalization numbers?
