If we are going to discuss crime rates we should all be basing it on the same stats.
If someone says group x commits more crimes it is important to know if it is based on arrests, convictions, incarcerations or something else.

You have to understand what goes into the numbers to make sure it is a true reflection.
Lets take one example. A town of 50k and 5k police (just picked figures). Another town of 50k and 1k police. If a burglary was committed in both towns in which town do you think would have a better chance for an arrest?

Just noting figures - in Lakewood, NJ, a town with about 105,000-150,000 residents, there are about 145 police officers.

I always love the example of people who go to bars have a higher rate of lung cancer. They never factor in that those who go to bars smoke at a higher rate than the general public.

That's a great point, but you can probably also assume that the ratio of police to population got to that point because of crime. It's not a random number, rather it's generally driven by need.

My point is the stats are skewed. There are tons of articles on this (GIYF). If they are accurate I don't know.

Makes sense there can be some skewing, but the sentiment that an AA male poses more risk when I take a walk is an accurate one whether it’s 8 times the risk or if the stats are skewed and it’s only 4 or 5 times the risk of being the victim of a violent crime.

Are these higher rates because of inner city crime rates. Is it the same for suburbs? I am going to take a wild guess that many/most here don't take walks in the inner city.
