Since the money will be sitting untouched for a long time, he should be able to get a higher then regular yeilding, savings account

I dont see why it wouldnt be good for kids... With bonds, the yield your going to get these days from a bond fund are going to be incredibly low. That, coupled with the expense fee of a fund make it almost not worth it.

Following an earlier thread I opened an Ally CD.  What a pain.  It took weeks and at least two calls because they kept finding things they couldn't read on the application.
