Food:
  • If you get a piece of eggshell in with the eggs while cracking them, use the other half of the eggshell to fish it out instead of trying to use your fingers or anything else.
  • If you want to separate the yolk from the white, take an empty clean water bottle, squeeze the bottle, place the mouth over the yolk and slowly release the bottle. The yolk will get sucked up into the bottle with minimal/no white.
  • When boiling eggs, add 1/4 teaspoon baking soda to the water. Makes them really easy to peel and doesn't affect the taste.
  • If you have a room temperature bottle (and esp can) that you want to get cold fast, wrap a wet paper towel around it and put it in the freezer. It'll be ice cold pretty quickly.
  • Microwave rice from TJ's
  • Open a can of corn, put salt pepper and cheese on top, microwave or oven it (super easy lunch)
  • 2 slices of old pizza from the fridge, lay them cheese sides on top of each other and put them in a sandwich maker. Instant calzone.
  • For chulent of course.. Using only navy beans, chulent mix a big no no.
  • If you're going to freeze ground beef, put it in a gallon ziploc and squeeze/spread it flat to fill the bag. You can stack them in the freezer and it'll defrost much faster (without the outside spoiling while the inside is still frozen).
  • To easily melt a small amount of chocolate / butter, put it in a ziploc bag and put that into a mug of hot water for a few minutes. No mess! You can cut a hole in the corner to pipe chocolate too.
  • Shredded cheese lasts longer in the freezer, but will clump up, before freezing add a little bit of cornstarch (1tbs) and shake vigorously. The pieces will stay separate and it'll be easy to use.
  • To cool down baby food without blowing at it (which may add your bacteria to the food) wave your hand at it.
Travel:
  • If you want a hot meal on any plane, bring a tradition soup or oatmeal packet and use the free hot water they offer with tea. Great for traveling in general.
  • Before you go on a long flight, freeze a JJ cappuccino.  If it's frozen they let it on the plane. Once you get up from your nap on the plane there is nothing as refreshing as an iced cappuccino. It should still be freezing but not frozen.
  • When packing a suitcase, put your socks inside your shoes. It will save a little space and stop your shoes from getting crushed.
  • The aisle seat armrest usually has a little button underneath by the hinge that allows you to lift it. Makes it much easier to get in and out of your seat, especially if your tray table is open with stuff on it.
  • When we go on trips My wife packs the childrens clothing in individual ziplocs for each day of our trip. Like that she doesn't have to look for all the matching stuff.
Computers:
  • You can open links a in new tab by clicking with the scroll wheel.

    Quickly toggle between tabs.

    1) Excel and most internet browsers: Ctrl + PgUp/Dn
    2) Google Sheets: Ctrl + Shift + PgUpDn
    3) chrome: control-tab / control-shift-tab
alternatively ctrl+number tab from left

  • Widows+V will open up your clipboard with all recent stuff copied.
Every day/Home:
  • If you are drilling into a wall, open an envelope and tape the flap to the wall under where you are drilling and it catches all the plaster/dust that comes out. Makes cleanup after a small drilling a breeze
  • Open glass jars with rubber gloves, Or a rubber band around the lid.
  • When you first open a bottle of soda or seltzer or pop, begin by slowly turning the cap one-quarter turn and wait about 10 seconds, watching for the small bubbles to slow down, and listening as the sssst of escaping gas gets quieter.  Then turn another 1/4 turn, and wait another 10 seconds till it quiets down.
  • If you get chewing gum on your clothes, put the clothes in the freezer for a bit, it will be much easier to remove the gum afterwards.
Stores:

  • Check out at the pharmacy in the grocery store when the regular lines are long.
Perscriptions:

  • GoodRX.com, even for meds that are covered. My insurance can have a $15 copay, but coupon from GoodRX gets me the medication for $7. When insurance doesn't cover the medication, it's a fraction of the cost. I've seen discounts of 90%
Holidays:
  • After Yom Tov, especially Pesach, make a spreadsheet. What on the menu went over well with guests and kids. What did you run short on and need to have more next time around. What did you way overbuy on. That way there is no need to reinvent the wheel next year.

I was out shopping at Costco last week before YT, and when I finished, I had forgotten where I parked my car.

So what do you do? You press the panic button. But that didn't work. I tried multiple times, but it just wasn't connecting.

I then remembered something which I had read a while back, that if your key fob isn't working because you're too far, try putting it to your forehead. And I did just that, and tada, it worked BH!!
I do this all the time when my downloads aren't finishing fast enough. I pick up the mifi and the speed immediately improves.

we've been using these for a while. I prefer soup on shabbos instead of cholent. The kids still want their cholent.

One bag has pastrami meat. It doesn't grow with cooking.
The other, a traditional bean chulent, is loosely closed and has room to grow as the beans absorb the water.

At the risk of triple posting

Not that it's as good as a desktop site, but as a last resort, you can view a site as mobile in chrome- press F12, and then click the device toggle button. Just tested with Haul and it works.

When opening a container that has a plastic seal cover (i.e. cream cheese, lots of commercially produced dips...), please take off the whole thing. I don't know of any benefit to leaving it on.
If it's something that you measure a level spoonful, it makes sense to cut off half.  This applies to wide-mouth herb and spice jars as well as sour cream, instant coffee, etc.  Possibly cream cheese if calorie counting.

https://www.howtogeek.com/how-to-stop-annoying-your-neighbors-with-your-subwoofer/

Quote
Any decent person should be concerned about whether they're bothering their neighbors. Unfortunately, subwoofers can be a major culprit when it comes to excessive noise. Here's how to keep it to a minimum.

Ask Your Neighbors if They Can, in Fact, Hear It
The first step to avoiding bothering your neighbors is checking in with them to see if you have been bothering them in the first place. If you've been using your subwoofer with no added insulation and things they may have been hearing, knock on their door or give them a call to see if they can hear it, if it's annoying, and if so, how much. If you live in a well-insulated building there's a chance they might not be hearing it at all, and you may have nothing to worry about after all.

If they can hear it, ask how bad the situation is. Is it so loud it's disrupting their work or sleep, or is it tolerable but just annoying? The degree to which it's audible matters a lot, since a slightly annoying subwoofer might only require one or two mitigation methods. A more audible and irritating subwoofer will require a combination of methods, as well as being mindful of when you're blasting your music.

Put Down Some Rugs
Rugs are a music lover's best friend. Not only do they make a space feel better decorated, they also absorb a lot of sound waves. This helps to both reduce echo and reduce the amount of sound your neighbors have to hear coming from your suite. Rugs on the floor and even rugs mounted on the wall can do a lot to mitigate any excessive bass travel from your subwoofer through the walls and floors.

Acoustic treatment like placing rugs doesn't necessarily serve to soundproof the apartment; that would require renter-unfriendly measures. But dampening some of the sound does keep some level of sound from escaping your space, and putting the subwoofer on a rug can keep the vibrations from going directly through a hard floor.

Place Your Subwoofer on a Sound-Isolating Pad
One of the major issues with subwoofers is that when they're placed on the floor, the vibrations emitted by them travel very directly downward with little mitigation. Sound-isolating pads are a fantastic way to reduce the amount of bass traveling through floors. Lots of drummers use them to prevent downstairs neighbors from hearing every single kick drum hit they make, and they are super handy for speakers as well. Putting your subwoofer on a sound-isolating pad will keep the rumbling from traveling downward to the floor directly below it.

If pads that are specifically marketed as sound isolation pads are a bit too expensive for your budget, you can also use any thick foam pad underneath the subwoofer. Those puzzle piece-style foam exercise pads you see in the gym are much more affordable, and one or two of those will help a lot with a loud, boomy subwoofer.

Raise Your Subwoofer Above the Floor
Building on keeping the subwoofer from being directly on the floor, you can always raise it. Many people will opt to attach feet to the bottom of the subwoofer, so it's not directly vibrating against the floor. This won't completely prevent sound from traveling through the floor, but it does diminish it quite a bit.

You can also opt to place the subwoofer on another surface, like a small end table, a shelf on a media console, or any other flat raised surface.

Install Bass Traps
Illustration of a living room with some bass traps on the wall.Lucas Gouveia / How-To Geek | Borodatch / Shutterstock
While acoustic treatment isn't the same as soundproofing, it does create a little bit of a dampening effect when it comes to sound waves. On top of whatever dampening you can manage with rugs and wall coverings, bass traps in the corners of the room will help to absorb some of the bass traveling throughout the room. Not only will bass traps help keep your music from bothering your neighbors, it'll also make music sound better in that room by evening out some of those bass frequencies.

Turn Down the Volume
Sometimes the key to not annoying your neighbors is listening to their complaints. If you've tried a few things and the bass from your subwoofer is still audible outside your suite, you can always just opt to turn down the volume. You're still going to be able to enjoy your music if the bass is a bit quieter. If you can directly control the volume of the subwoofer itself, turn that down. If you can't change it directly, you can control the EQ of the music you're listening to. Go ahead and de-emphasize bass and sub-bass a bit until it's less boomy.

By taking some of these steps to acoustically treat the room and keep the subwoofer from being directly on the floor, you can help keep noise complaints at bay and not make enemies with your neighbors. Apartment living means you will always be able to hear some amount of noise from other suites, but you can do your part to not be a problem by keeping that subwoofer in check.

Your away for YT or just on vacation, and you need a tag, string or something similar cut off from whatever it is. But you don't have a scissor?!

Use your nail clipper!

Came in handy for me many times.

Though, that will only get you so far.

For a piece of thread, fine. But if it's a plastic string, it can be hard.
