How are the votes held, secret ballot?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

In what way was it a punt? They slapped down the president from claiming that he is categorically exempt from State Criminal subpoenas, and slapped down the House Democrats for pretending that their request for Trump's tax returns wasn't a fishing expedition.

If it wasn't an election year they probably would have ruled.

Where are you getting the idea that they didn't rule?

You call that a ruling. The only thing they made clear is the president has no immunity. Punted to the lower courts on everything else.

Everything else wasn't being litigated. Scotus usually does not rule on disputes that haven't gone through the court system.

In these cases they gave the lower courts general guidelines on how to decide based on the evidence that will be presented. SCOTUS couldn't rule whether these subpoenas fit within those guidelines, because there was not enough evidence in the record.

My view on this whole matter: I hate when the SCOTUS becomes a political topic. I always saw them as a sacred body. Yes, each justice has their own views of the constitution, but they were meant to remain unaffected by what happened in the world. As such, they were beyond reproach, and it was taboo to talk about their intentions.

All that seems to have changed. Justice Roberts seems to believe that the court should not be predictable, and has gone out of his way to pander to both sides of the political spectrum. This has opened him up for major critique. I still wish Senator Cruz wouldn't admonish him on the floor of the Senate. However, the mixing into politics makes it almost inevitable.

To me, though, the integrity of the body remains a topic I shy away from discussing. If we can cast aspersions on them, we have nothing holding this country together. I say this about every single member of the court, even the ones whom I wish for their speedy retirement.

Doesn't 7-2 and not 5-4 party line votes give you hope?

I was very pleased by today's rulings, even though it was not good for Trump. If Trump's nominees can vote against him, it's a sign of a healthy judiciary. I don't believe they were politically motivated, rather it is what they thought the Constitution warranted.

For all the crap Roberts has been taking lately maybe he is accomplishing more than meets the eye.
