Modded WhatsApp
« on: June 21, 2020, 07:08:28 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with using one of these modded WhatsApp apks? (eg. GB WhatsApp, WhatsApp plus, whatstweak, FM WhatsApp etc).

Is it safe? Will your privacy be compromised? Will you get your account shut down by WhatsApp?

Do you need to root your device in order to use them?

Please advise.

Giving any other entity access to your whatsapp or using whatsapp through any service that has modded software will automatically decrease your privacy.

True.

But is it like trusting any other app that doesn't offer end to end encryption? Or does it have more risks like potential malware hidden in coding looking to actively steal data?

What are you trying to accomplish?

There are several websites that offer apks that claim to be WhatsApp with several tweaks/modifications. By playing with the code they can bypass certain restrictions and allow much more customization. One of these tempting features is the ability to share media files up to 1gb, far larger than WhatsApp ordinarily allows.

I would like to use this either as my primary WhatsApp or at least on a second number, to take advantage of these features. However I am nervous and would like to know more as to its safety.

That article is addressing apps that masquerade as WhatsApp and then show you ads.
These are "legitimate" modded apps that claim no ads, and are not pretending to be original WhatsApp.

As an aside, you should always check any Mod APKs that you download for Trojans and the like.
Websites like Virustotal and the like are helpful.

Good point.

Maybe some of them do have (hopefully harmless) ads.
Although what is the motive of any app that doesn't have ads or steal data?

Open source is really only useful from large corporations with other revenue streams. Microsoft is the largest open source contributor in the world. They pay all their programmers, don't lose money bc no one takes their code and competes with them and they profit off products they sell thanks to open source.

Random app developers arent into working pro bono.

Even the few programs that exist for free  (ie open office) make money.

Examples?
There are tons of devs that offer free software. One example would be Nir Sofer (nirsoft) who offers tens if not hundreds of free utilities with no ads

Some ecosystems have entire communities of people who write / collaborate / maintain free software that they and others can use for free.

Or the many core utilities (that everything - not everyone - uses), an example that was recently written about in the news is curl, but there are many like it.
