Just did this and decided (gut decision) that going generic (made in China) with this is gambling with your health, so I bought the OEM recommended.

Made a similar calculation as @Euclid. Toner breaks the machine, you're out a couple hundred bucks. Filter messes with the fridge, that's more expensive to replace. Plus I'd rather spend the extra $15-20 to have a little more peace of mind for something my family is putting into their bodies on a daily basis.

What does a filter have to do with messing up you refrigerator?

It's not cheaper than standard generic toner that you can find on Amazon and elsewhere.

I'd much rather go with an Amazon 'brand' that is a bit known and have good ratings. Enjoy.
 See no reason why to buy a real one when it's double the price.
  The same way the company can develop a filter, any company can do the same.
   Works just fine and been enjoying my water with this filter for almost 2 and half years.
 Going to repurchase one of these when I need to replenish my stock.
   Not quite sure why mine was 6 for $37 bucks while yours was 37 for for 3 unit's.

I was disappointed that it came dusty and greasy I rinsed it with soap
and that the water inlet pipe is a few inches shorter then the original so I cant screw it back in place
the most difficult part was  https://youtu.be/356QVsLtWVE?t=109  to pull it out, did it with a plyer

works ok, doesn't leak
