Primary Races to Watch Tuesday
« on: June 22, 2020, 11:29:58 AM »
Tomorrow, there are primary elections taking place in many states. Here are a few elections to watch:

In New York's 9th congressional district Democrat Primary, frum Council Member Chaim Deutsch is mounting a challenge. His chances seem slim to me, but I didn't look too deeply into the race. If he would win, his chances as a Democrat in NY make him likely to win the general election, in which case he would become the only frum Jew in US Congress.

The incumbent U.S. Representative for New York's 16th congressional district is Democrat Eliot Engel. He is a powerful congressman (Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee) and is a big supporter of Israel. (He was also a big figure in the impeachment of Trump.) He is facing a real challenge from an AOC style candidate, and may be outed this year. He is also suffering from a hot-mic video, in which he said that he only wants to speak at the Black Lives Matter march because it's a primary year.

In the Kentucky senate Democrat Primary (to determine who will challenge Mitch McConnell in the general election), the progressive candidate seems to have a real chance at toppling the Democratic establishment candidate.

Breaking from 3 weeks ago 🙄
I was just trying to show one of the things he's struggling with. Wasn't meant to be new, just as part of the explanation of the race.

I know facts don't matter, but it seems like he is saying that he wouldn't push himself in to talk (in response to being told that there are a lot of people who want to speak), not that he wouldn't be interested...

Indeed. I personally don't think it's an issue. But some misconstrued this to make it as though he only cares about Black lives because of the election.

NY-19 Republican primary is interesting in that it's a possible pickup opportunity for Republicans.

לכבוד חברי וידידי
A few people asked me who to vote for in tomorrow's primary election. Since the winner of the Democratic primary will almost certainly be the winner in November it's more important to vote now than in November.

There's a presidential primary, with Joe Biden and a bunch of others on the ballot. Biden has enough delegates to clinch the nomination already so feel free to vote for or against him.

There are two very important House races in Boro Park. In both, whoever wins tomorrow will win in November. Reps. Yvette Clarke and Jerry Nadler are up for reelection. Clarke has long fallen asleep and just wakes up every two years. You probably won't feel it in your personal life but askanim find it invaluable to have a frum person in Congress. Chaim Deutsch is running and he has a chance. Please vote for him.

There's also Nadler. He indeed was once great for the Jews but it's been years since he's changed. He's now a card carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Last week he immediately answered "yes" when asked if yeshivas should be investigated. On the other hand, Lindsey Boylan, another candidate, gave a great answer. She's progressive but has a relationship with our community. And she can't be worse than Nadler. She'll take a good part of the progressive vote and is the first person in decades to have a fighting chance at beating Nadler. Please vote for Boylan.

If you're a Republican, you can go straight to shul. There's no Republican primary. You don't count in NYC.

I live in NJ and am not on top of NY politics, but I find it interesting that the Jewish community seems to be endorsing Lindsey Boylan in the race against Jerry Nadler. I know nothing about Boylan besides that she supported Bernie Sanders and seems to be a far-left progressive. The third candidate in the race, who I also don't know much about, was an Andrew Yang supporter.

Another thing perplexing me: the main fodder brought against Nadler is that he said yes when asked if yeshivos should be monitored for following social distancing restrictions. Guys, it was a lightening round of a debate. Nadler is far from being quick at anything. He even used his notes extensively during the impeachment hearings (while Schiff notably didn't). I don't think such an impromptu answer carries much weight at all.

Again, I don't live in the area, but I would love some insight on this.

I don't know, but I didn't hear mention of that when people were saying to vote for his opponent. I only heard about his yeshiva answer.

Some spoke about his being anti-Trump, but if you vote out every anti-Trump politician in New York, there won't be any politicians left.

Because frum askanim and people telling the rabbanim what to say/vote are dumb and nearsighted. Every single one said to vote for cuomo and de blasio.... look how thats turning out. They shoot themselves in the leg every single election.

Most of NY voted by mail in ballot, so the election night results are anything but final, but they usually are a good indication. (mail in ballots only get counted starting tomorrow).

With more than half of districts reporting, Chaim Deutsch is trailing in 4th place, with about 8 percent of the votes. The incumbent has more than 50 percent.

With almost all of his districts reporting, Jerry Nadler has about 65 percent on the votes. The "Jewish endorsed" candidate is in 2nd place, with about 22 percent.

With about one third of his districts reporting, Eliot Engel is trailing the progressive candidate. Engel has about 35 percent to the progressive's 60.

The winner is only 24, but will be the mandated 25 in August. He's half paralyzed.
Surprisingly, there have been a number of congressmen in their 20s.
