Those who say this are saying "Our religion requires us to do what we feel is best for our children's health and this is what we feel is best for their health" not that it directly bans immunizations.

When the government starts deciding what is a valid religious practice and what is not, bris milah and shechita comes on the chopping block, with a whole lot more. It's in everyone's best interest to avoid that slippery slope.

No matter if the practice is valid or not if it competes with a compelling public interest there will be pushback. To minimize the deterioration of religious nights we should try to make these battles as rare as possible, and not budge an inch when we do.
