I think this year's election is not about winning the centrists, it's about who can get more of their base to vote. I think we'll see record low turnout from the 20% in the middle. There's just not a lot to get excited about on either side unless you're a radical.

To the point of the OP, I think the game plan is to ride the super-prog wave. Put in a strong younger progressive black woman as VP to help counter all the complaints against Uncle Joe (old, moderate, racist, misogynist), prop him up through the elections and as far as he'll go before they have to invoke the 25th, then go for 8 more years with the fresh blood VP. They get to either take credit for Joe's official 4 years if they go well, or blame him if it goes south. Side benefit is that the VP may inspire enough of the base (a la Obamamania '10) to pull off a sweep of both Houses in '22.

The question is whether or not they'll take him out before the election. If he is doing well against Trump (as he is now), they have no reason to take him out until after the election. But, if his cognitive decline starts to lead to a decline in his poll numbers, as they probably will when he starts debating, they may want to knock him out and let Kamala Harris (or whoever his their VP pick is) to lead the party through the election.

I think they are confident that given the numbers now, and bone fide candidate can win against Trump. They just don't want baggage to get in the way. For Clinton, it was the emails. For Biden, it may be his dementia. But they will be hesitant to shake things up unless they have to.
