You wouldn't need unions if it wasn't for scumbag employers.

True, we need to find the middle ground between the unions and the bosses

Right. And the government are scumbag employers with no oversight or accountability. ::)

@CountValentine can you make a reasonable argument for public unions (whether unions in government workplaces or contractors for various government agencies)?

Do you really think a government agency wouldn't be held accountable for those without unions?

Though I would exclude Job security. A person's job security should be tied to their performance. It is costly to hire and train new employees.

Just look at benefits. Are they better for the union members or the private sector?

So not offering Cadillac benefits is being a scumbag?  ::)

Benefits are a way to attract and retain good employees. The free market works.

You are jumping from question to question.
I said unions are necessary because of scumbag employers. Not all employers are scumbags.
Now if you want to talk about one of the largest government unions then yes USPS is a scumbag employer.

USPS has many issues, and it doesn't seem like Unions are a solution. It's kind of government invisible foot (to use a Rush Limbaugh expression which is a play on Adam Smith's invisible hand).

ETA: How would you imagine the USPS without a union? Would it be better? Worse? Would we experience creative destruction?

Unions are a necessary evil, not the solution.

If you treat employees fairly you would not need unions. Free market does not equal fair market.

Just look at the recent Amazon vote. Employees felt they were being treated fairly and voted the union down.

How about teacher's unions?

Police and Fire unions?

They have way to much power, especially teachers.
They should use the USPS model. No strike clause and binding arbitration if the two sides can't agree.

Ok. That sounds more reasonable. Those are the unions I had in mind talking about Public Unions.

In theory a person can choose to never use the USPS for good or for bad. We don't have a choice about our local tax dollars when it comes to Police, Fire and Public Education.

How would you handle the firing on individuals if there were no unions? Police come to mind with everything that is going on.

In my experience (and many union delegates I've worked with agree), the unions spend 99% of their time defending the employees who deserve to be fired, and everyone knows it.

99% is high but I get your point. This is on the local level. Unions earn their money on the national level negotiating pay, benefits and other high priority things.

How about replacing unions with outside independent arbitrators? With legal framework to support it (rather than the legal framework empowering unions).

If we could get independent arbitrators that would work.

There's already a framework in place - there are individuals or organizations whose job it is to decide matters between employers and unions. Why not just remove the unions and replace them with the employees directly?

And when I say 99%...I'm actually understating the case. I've worked for several employers, several different facilities...especially at the point where there are actual consequences - suspensions, termination, etc - you're always dealing with employees who could've been written up 10 times for every one we gave them.

Union is currently grieving a suspension we gave - the employee couldn't understand why we're picking on him, he's such a good employee that, "when you asked me to come on time, I come on time!" (translation - when I got a final warning a few weeks ago, I've been coming on time since then)
