odor removal
« on: June 01, 2022, 09:59:28 PM »
Recently I moved into a house and there is a persistent but faint odor throughout the home and have no idea what it is. I painted and changed the HVAC filters, are there people specializing in odor removal/detection? any recommendations?

Sewer? Mold? Is the basement worse than the upper floors?

Look into anything that can contain VOC

the basement has a  different strong smell that I can't identify but don't think it is moisture related,  and smells different than the upstairs but maybe it is connected to the smell upstairs (I have a bad dehumidifier  I hopefully will get around to getting a commercial one tomorrow and see if it helps but doubt it). The unfinished basement smell might be mothballs or some other bait but don't know how I can clean out the expansion crack on my foundation.
I have to do some research into voc

For upstairs and downstairs
Do environmental testing(mold, moisture etc.) and rent some commercial air purifiers, in that order.
Could also be a dead animal somewhere in the wall.

It is possible that it is sewer related, was an unlicensed plumber doing some work? Perhaps a drain without a P trap etc. Or a clogged drain, (you can have a sewer company clean the drains to rule that out.)

I really hope it is not mold/ moisture.

I had a guy come down and check for moisture, and he did not see anything. I will schedule a duct cleaning, but dont have high hopes. Dead animal smells are supposed to go away over time, and not really finding much out about VOC

Was there ever any pets living in the home?
