Transferring Vehicle Ownership
« on: December 18, 2019, 10:43:48 PM »
I need to transfer Vehicle Ownership from my Father to me, I am completely in the dark if someone can help me out.
Do I write that it was a gift? do I have to pay taxes?
I live in N.J.

Thanks!

I once got a car as a “gift” from a relative, I remember typing up a letter coming from the giver stating that it was a gift. I can’t remember if it was notarized

Got it done, was very straight forward.

Fill out the title as usual, by "sale price" you write gift., thereby no taxes.
The DMV agent did tell me that taxation depot. might reach out due to the car being fairly new, so I should get a notarized bill of sale.

They told me the same as it is a foreign thing that someone woudl gift someone a car to anyone. lady was accusing me of lieing pretty much.

Can anyone answer this question as seems vague from nys dmv site..

Can i transfer a vehicle registration in nyc as a gift to a family member via online/mail without them having to actuality go in to the dmv office? (as not sure if due to covid there would be more flexibility)

Thanks!
