Fourth, and possibly most important, FL ordered their coroner's offices not to release any data, so we have no idea how many people actually died or what they died from.

They lag a few weeks behind. Also there is a higher percentage of younger ppl this go-around. Make of it what you like.

Any observations from the frontlines?

Any observations from the frontlines?

We are about triple our total inpatients compared to the “peak of the 1st wave”. Converting most of the ERs and ICUs to COVID ICUs. Cutting back on most non-emergent surgeries requiring hospitalizations. Most hospitals in South Florida have cancelled elective cases altogether but my hospital system has not yet. They are starting to pull residents from other services to help the hospitalist teams who are at or near capacity. Having said all this - we are running about even on total COVID cases for the past 3-4 days. This can be an aberration but hopefully is evidence of turning the corner. We are still getting new COVID patients but this current batch of patients are more quickly able to be discharged -likely due to the greater percentage of young/healthy patients as compared to the more elderly sicker patients during the first wave.

There is no active count of COVID-19 positive persons admitted to a hospital ER or as an in-patient in the state of Florida.

Therefore, any statement regarding the current trend in ER and hospital admissions (and deaths-more on that below) are entirenly non-evidence based.

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has never provided data about the number of people currently hospitalized or in the emergency room who are COVID-19 positive. They do not provide dates for when COVID-19 persons were admitted to or discharged from the ER or as in-patients to a hospital.

The only hospital surveillance data available to the public is the AHCA current bed availability data (see note about that data to the left) and the Florida Metrics data published by DOH every Sunday, which counts the total number of legal Florida residents who visited an ER in the state of Florida with symptoms matching the key terms of influenza and COVID-19 (reported by week).

Additionally, DOH does not provide the date of death for any case. The chart on the now-disabled DOH dshboard showing resident deaths by date is just that - residents only by date of death for cases where a death certificate has been received and the date of death verified by the state.

The CDC warns "delays in reporting a person's death to the state can range from 1 week to 8 weeks or more, depending on the jurisdiction and cause of death."

According to internal DOH records, deaths reported by DOH were reported an average 7-21 days after the COVID-19 positive person died (date from March through mid-June_, with some deaths reported as late as 44 days after death.

Don’t know about all that info above, my data is directly from my hospital system which has been keeping an accurate and active measure throughout.

This is referring to info provided through DoH or other government sources. It's what makes first hand accounts like yours so much more valuable to us (at least me).

Per FL Covid Actions dashboard above, FL now has 859 ICU beds available, down from over 1300 earlier this week. There are delays in reporting, so the drop is probably not nearly as dramatic as it seems, but 859 is not a large number.

120 deaths were reported today, which is a record high. Only 30 of those deaths actually occurred in July. Most are deaths from June. A couple of deaths were from as far back as April. Many people think the daily death count was relatively low but they’re completely unaware of the new case —> reported death lag. In my estimates it takes about 30 days to start seeing the fatal effects of a spike in new cases.

Florida’s COVID-19 Data: What We Know, What’s Wrong, and What’s Missing
https://covidtracking.com/blog/florida-covid-19-data

Some examples:
-1 of 3 states that does not publish hospitalization data (the only one surging)
-Mixing PCR and antigen testing data
-Does not count probable cases and deaths. Death reporting can lag over 2 months. The deaths reported daily, are not from the previous few days but may go back months.
-Keeps changing how things count such as positivity rate, time of day, Florida residents

Miami-Dade County reported at 33% positivity rate yesterday:

Today, Trump visits Miami-Dade County. Ignoring who is in office for a second, but that's probably not where anyone wants their President hanging out.

The scary part is that is happening in many states.
