Is there just 1 yud in Bayla?

I am almost positive that the correct way to spell it is with 1 yud, though that doesn't mean we don't spell it with two on a daily basis. As mentioned, correct spelling is most important on Gittin.

Talking of which, reminds me of a family member where I'm not sure of the correct spelling. This goes back to the e sound found in Mendel, (Mechl,) Rechel, etc. where some put a yud in there such as מענדיל, רעכיל, while some drop it such as מענדל, רעכל. Any insights?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

yes this "el" is very tricky. Need to check the sefer from the sanzer ruv. I do know for example that the satmera rebeztin, mother of the current satmer rebbes spells it pesil with a yid for whatever that means.. However everything is researchable in holy seforim of tzadikim unless its a made up english name trying to be forced into a hebrew spelling..

Even in holy seforim of tzadikim, you will find some of these names spelled in different ways. Specific famous name mentioned מענדיל vs מענדל hence (צמח צדק vs צמח צדיק) (my grandfather's headstone has his father's name spelled with a yud, but I didn't put one on my father's ע"ה headstone, nor is it in my son's name). I've seen רעכל and רעכיל. etc.

I've heard from one of the rabbonim from Washington Heights that the origin of Baila is from bella (French for beautiful).
It's actually Beautiful in Italian. My grandfather and his family lived in Italy before the war. After my Uncle's wedding, my dad had a conversation about marriage with his Zayde. His zayde told him not to worry, that he too would soon find his bashert,  ".. and she will be a Bella".

Although my great-grandfather wouldn't live to see it, a little over a year later my dad got married to my mom (A"H) - who's name was Bella. (She spelled it בלה , and would be the first to acknowledge it was wrong - but she kept using it.). Interestingly, we corrected it to בילה on her tombstone.

There are plenty of Beila's who are called Bella (my granddaughter being one of them).

Kaila
Baila
Faiga
Bluma
Roiza

Shprintza
Mushka

etc etc etc

There probably were, anyway the whole area was called the Lita. Eastern Europe's map today is a mess when you know where shtetels and town used to be. I.e. Western Ukraine. Much of famous cities from East Galicia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Romania are now in Ukraine. These thugs even completely changed the names of them. Try to find Beregsaz or Ungvar >:(

That's how I've spelled my shvigger's name at the ohel, but I've also written Bayla and Leib with 2 yuds, so this is all new to me.

It's simpler than the other 2, Two yuds is more common to see although likely not correct.
Btw first time I see Baila spelled in English Bayla. On purpose?
