No Mushky?!?!

IINM that was unheard of prior to 5748, and came mostly out of ignorance. חי' מושקא was fondly called מוסי or מוסיא.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

How did R' Mendel M'Vitepsk spell his name Mendel in his famous letters?

Talking of which, the spelling of city names might also be important for Gittin... Is it Vitebsk or Vitepsk?

As you can see in the quotes I bring from קב נקי, he quotes from בית שמואל.

Most of our names are biblical. Makes life easier :D

Ha, good point, it drives me NUTS when I see mamish ignorant spellings on buildings but even more on Matzeivos as that is permanent. And then I hear people saying "thats how its spelled on the matzeiva so it must be right" LOL because someone who doesnt know how to spell put it on a gravestone now everyone needs to copy the amiratzus?!

everyone has their mishegasin, this is mine  :D

Reminds me of https://youtu.be/Gv0iSUtqI8A?t=1638

Or for those from the 2nd best type of yeshiva, go to 27:28 in the embedded video (though you can scroll back for more entertainment).

Another interesting thing where the hei & alef come into play is...

Golda = alef
Zahava = hei

Roiza = alef
Shoshana = hei

Etc etc

in what today is known as belarus there were chasidim, in what today is known as lithuania, as far as i know there werent any chasidim
As pointed out, the borders and the names were pretty fluid throughout history (and Yidden living in actual Russia is a later development than in Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine, etc.)

The Alter Rebbe was known as the Rav from Ladi or Liozna, both towns in what was known as רייסין. You might have heard of רייסין bunched together with ליטא when it comes to מנהגים (slichos comes to mind כמנהג ליטא רייסין זאמוט). Many places in current Belarus you would consider of Jewish Lithuanian ethnicity: Grodno, Lida, Minsk just to name a few showing up on the map below.

Look at some of the maps here http://www.lithuanianmaps.com/Maps1777-86.html and you will see these areas as part of Lithuania.

For example, see

not really, but id be happy to hear...

The Maggid's family had a מגילת יוחסין going back centuries (I'm not sure how far back, but IIRC back to גאונים, possibly even אמוראים or תנאים). At a certain point that megilla was lost to a fire. The Maggid's mother was very upset about it, so her son told her, don't worry, we will start a new Yichus from me.

After the Maggid passed away, territories were divided amongst the talmidim to spread Chassidus. The Alter Rebbe was given Russia and Lithuania IINM.

I'm sure @Freddie and others can give more accurate details of the stories.

So just keep one consistent spelling throughout your lifetime and you're good to go.
+1
If someone misspells a biblical name, then i agree, it is a real busha.
A Yiddish name, I dont agree that there are necessarily correct or incorrect spellings. As long as they keep it throughout the lifetime, i dont see the issue. Especially since  i am of the opinion that spellings could have varied according the origin location, just like Yiddish language does.

Because you have your settings wrong. It should be only 3 pages with the right settings. But if you get a map of Lithuania from a year to match your current number of likes, it might turn more interesting.

While on this topic.. I once heard that the name Beila (Technically Liba too) is the roshei teivos for:

Baruch hashem leolam amen. beis yid lamed alef
Simular idea; i heard that the Yiddish name Hinda is double name of Hashem (Adno+H') backward. Really gives a new perspective on the name.
