Hi everyone, thanks again for the help! We did find her ketubah and can confirm her Hebrew name was actually ציזיא - thoughts on the meaning? Can also confirm her parents did come from Russia.

Thanks!

I don't have any additional insights on meaning other than what I previously posted, but did come across this interesting tidbit:

I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

See if it appears in Alexander Beider's A dictionary of Ashkenazic given names : their origins, structure, pronunciation, and migrations.  I don't know where you are, but it's available in large libraries, like NYPL, Brooklyn PL, YU, Center for Jewish History.  Under the current circumstances, you might be able to ask a reference librarian to look it up for you.

Rather expensive book, but thanks for the reference.

Looks like an answer might be found there based on https://www.avotaynu.com/books/dagnindex.htm#FeminineIndex

Nice review here: http://www.khazaria.com/beider.html
This cheaper book might be of help too: https://www.avotaynu.com/books.htm

I see there's a list of the names included in Beider's book, and both  Tsize and Tsizye appear.
https://www.avotaynu.com/books/dagnindex.htm#FeminineIndex

You could buy it for $85, but I would go the library route!
https://www.avotaynu.com/books/dagn.htm

It comes in paperback too, $29

Interesting thread.

One of my daughters is named after a grandmother that has the name spelled on her stone with an א at the end. The name is not found in Tanach to my knowledge, but is not Yiddish.  We were told that with a ה would be the Hebrew spelling, with the א, Aramaic.  Perhaps similar to Akiva?

Another question: any Halachic issues (or other issues) when names are spelled the same, but pronounced differently, like Malka and Milka (מלכה)?
A few in this thread have mentioned Akiva as an example of a non-Hebrew name. Isn't Akiva actually spelled with a Hei nowadays?
If you don't care why would you comment?

What does that mean? Why should it be different nowadays?

Only rarely in Modern Hebrew

Paperback is listed as a 232 page subset of the full book.

I wonder what it includes out of:

Quote

How to Use This Dictionary   243
Cities and Towns Cited in the Dictionary   257
Dictionary of Ashkenazic Masculine Names   258

Anyone know how to spell the Yiddish name Pessah? I have a relative whose name I thought was Pessiah, but she insists it's Pessah though she has no idea how to spell it.

Name would've originated in Russia, maybe Barditchev.

TIA.

פעסא. Thanks!

The Beis Shmuel seems to say mistamah b'yud if I'm reading it correctly, though I'm not sure what he means. Does he mean that it's really פעסיא?

Maybe he's referring to פעסיל rather than פעסל.

While on this topic.. I once heard that the name Beila (Technically Liba too) is the roshei teivos for:

Baruch hashem leolam amen. beis yid lamed alef

Thank you!  I was told that it is roshei teivos, but not for what, and I had always wondered.

@ExGingi I don't have a copy, and am not near a library that does.
If you're looking for a particular name, a reference librarian might be able to look it up for you, though I don't know how quickly they'll answer.  The book A dictionary of Ashkenazic given names : their origins, structure, pronunciation, and migrations / Alexander Beider is available at these two libraries:

National Library of Israel
