"This year we opened a new state..."
This year we opened the last state - South Dakota
and opened a new country - I don't remember which.

That was started a while ago by a fellow DDF'er.

I have no idea what it is about Cheshvon, IINM Teves was also not a very popular month.

But as I said, and concurred by @Freddie, in this generation almost all restrictions are off.

As for the Kinnus being timed around Shabbos Mevorchim Kislev, while someone might ask the organizers how it got started, my guess is that it was simply because it was close to Rosh Chodesh Kislev - a major Yom Tov for דור השביעי and also close to פרשת חיי שרה which describes the first שליחות, even though it has been brought upthread that it's about Shabbos Mevorchim Kislev and not about פרשת חיי שרה.

Just to clarify, the Kinus dates aren't according to R"CH Kislev (this year they would've made it Parshas Toldos).

The reason is that the Rebbe would not necessarily Farbreng every single Shabbos before 22 Shvat 5748 but Shabbos Mevorchim would always since his father in law instructed him to, since Shabbos M'vorchim Cheshvan doesn't work so they picked Kislev.

Unfortunately, whoever is doing the video production/mixing is not doing a great job. Switching cameras at dizzying speed with no rhyme or reason.
The 2 panorama screens, each a few hundred feet wide, looked amazing.

This is only the left 1/2 of the stage, and less then 1/4 of the room.

I used to go to the banquet for quite a few years, as a good place to meet friends, until it just got too big.

My brothers-in-law went this year too, and were extremely disappointed. I've heard from quite a few that this year wasn't so good.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

No. It's a convention.

depends what you're going for. If you haven't seen a minyan of men during the weekdays in the past 6+ months, then it can be very inspiring.

The opposite. It loses money.

OK, let me rephrase- isn't this also a massive fund raiser?

Interesting... judging by the numbers of "donor types" I see in the very few pics I have glanced at, it would appear otherwise.
Maybe they are only there to help pay for the event

The vast majority of those "donor types" were brought by their local shliach. They will not donate to the Kinus.
Yes the Kinus also has its own benefactors too but the Kinus operates at a loss.

Which is why I didn't say flat out that it is not a fundraiser. Since for the LOCAL Shliach this could result in extra support (just today I heard a story from a friend who has one of his benefactors come every year, and is simply inspired by the numbers, and every year increases his support to this Shliach).

I think one of the misconceptions people outside of Lubavitch have, is about the financial relationship between Merkos and the local Chabad Houses or Shluchim. There is generally no funding coming from Merkos to the local affiliates. Each Chabad House is responsible for their own budget.

It's because no matter how many times you say it, they just don't believe it.

why do you guys think that? I never heard that assumption made.
I do think people assume that there are some wildly successful fundraiser shluchim, like R Cunin, and they extrapolate to others, but not that every chabad house is bankrolled by CH
