Translating a Yiddish diary From the war
« on: July 16, 2020, 03:47:26 PM »
My grandmother has a diary written by her father during ww2 (they were running and hiding for almost 6 years!)
The diary is written with a pencil (fading) in Yiddish and he did not have the greatest handwriting.
My grandmother had it translated by someone however they did not know the history or geography of the area therefore making a lot of basic mistakes and they were still not able to translate it all!
If anybody knows someone who does this (Obviously for $) it would be a great help the original gets harder to read by the day!

how many pages? This is a must save. I can try & help you as I know someone who is great at reading handwritings but it costs. You can probably recoup if its very interesting by selling it as a book one day. Can you post one page as an example?

I spoke to a family member they are pretty sure it was copied/scanned at some point!
The biggest issue is finding somebody who does handwriting and knows old (czech?) yiddish and geography of the area!

I was in Khust about 6 years ago. When I was there I met an elderly man that had Czechoslovakian maps of the city. He was able to direct me to street my grandmother lived. He was known by the guy that runs the shul and spoke Ukrainian. Im hoping he is still alive today.
