Cancel or switch to free

As i've confirmed that it's not possible to join amex cards anymore so what would be the best option cancel them or just downgrade them to a free card

Ill explain a bit more Sometimes having to many card's either u just lose track of ur spending and u risk getting a f/r on the other hand it might be better for ur credit showing that u have so much credit and don't use too much. Or does anyone know of a way that u can still join amex cards today

Anyone that can help what effect does cancelling a card have on credit score
