PSA:
I didn't verify this myself but I received a message that there are some individuals advertising on heimish boards and papers offering to file your unemployment application even if you did not work. 17k guaranteed, 3k filing fee that you can pay after you receive your 17k.
They then take down all your info, file your claim and route the debit card to their address. They get back to you saying "sorry you're not eligible but don't worry about the 3k fee".

If you've ever reached out to me and included your full social security #, you got reprimanded for it. Identity theft is real and your ss# should not be handed out freely, even if someone is doing you a favor.

If you or anyone you know was taken advantage of, feel free to reach out to me at chaiplus1@gmail.com and I'll do my best to help guide you through the process of reporting identity theft to the DOL, and to see what can be done to recover any funds that are legitimately yours. (There would still be the bigger issue of identity theft in all other areas and you'll probably need a professional for that).

Ok @Dan got some info.

Numbers they've used so far on their ads:
718-690-8550
917-941-6769
917-825-1349

This guy got scammed and is willing to talk about his experience: 347-865-4581
Be a mensch and don't call him just to schmooze- he posted his number publicly so anyone who can help or has a similar experience can reach out. Only call if you want to help or had as similar experience and want to compare notes.

Perhaps keep his number private, and send it via PM to people who ask?

I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

He sent it out publicly to raise awareness and asked for the message to be spread...

That is not one of the three listed numbers. Could be legit. Obviously, tread with caution...

Here's one with the scammers phone # on it- the guy did mention that they change numbers as soon as one is bombed so I'd be very wary even if the # is not known to be one of their's.

A quick google search of that phone number turned up this ad:

Phone numbers are cheap, there's no reason they shouldn't keep switching.

I just received a voice note forward that's been circulating on Whatsapp (thank you to the ddfer who sent it to me) from a guy who identifies himself as the one who put out the original warning (although he's not the same guy I heard the warning from) saying that the boss of the agency personally called him to apologize that one of his employees had been rude and refused to hand over his login and debit card information, and that's not how they operate and he'll ensure that he has all his funds shortly.

I don't know if this is a legitimate mix up (personally for me the questions still stand. Why do they create login information without sharing it with the client, why do they change the debit card mailing address to something other than what's provided by the client, etc), or if they decided to save face and pocket 3k per client if they can't get the full 17k...

Regardless, please don't share SSN and other sensitive information with strangers. I know it's confusing to file a claim yourself but is it worth the potential pitfalls?
