(NYC) hyperlocal 15-20m grocery delivery apps
« on: September 19, 2021, 09:42:07 PM »
Iíve noticed a new business model, with grocery delivery apps that offer delivery with no fees or minimums within 15-20 minutes after ordering. They have small local warehouses that deliver within a mile or diameter from every such location.

So far Iíve found 1520, JOKR, and FridgeNoMore, the former two mostly serve only Manhattan, but FridgeNoMore serves parts of Brooklyn and has many Kosher products (Hashgacha levels vary). Prices are full retail, but no fees or surcharges and no minimums. I chatted with a rep and asked about filtering by Kosher status and was told that my inquiry would be forwarded to their Dev team. I also saw a recent offer on their Facebook page for 50% off your first order using code FNMFB but it didnít specify any min or max for the offer.

Anyone ever tried one of these services?

AVO is a startup with a interesting concept that IMHO has great potential.

Just tried out gopuff (they deliver to Brooklyn).
Order came in less than a half hour.
Delivery is 1.99 (or free with membership which is $6 / a month).
(Pm for referral link $25 credit).
App is a bit slow, and kosher items are limited to the manishevutz items you'll find in large shopping stores

Also check out Weee, gorillas.io, and BuyK, all of which have limited delivery areas.

Just ordered from FridgeNoMore, my address is at the far edge of their delivery map and my order of various diverse items was picked/packed and delivered literally within 10 minutes (!!) of submitting my order.

They have CY milk for 20-30% more than my local Kosher supermarkets.

50% off your first order with code WINTER712, make sure you donít miss the promo code field in your basket, as you canít add it afterwards.

They automatically apply a 10-15% tip, which you can adjust if youíd like.

Are they able to process SNAP payment?

NAFAIK, theyíre pretty responsive so you can get the app and ask on the in-app chat

Over the next 12 months, expect this market to explode. The big players are snatching up real estate throughout the city and making popup distribution centers. Its really amazing watching it unfold

Why are the big players (did I name them in the OP)? and why did Amazon wind down Prime Now while letting these companies eat their lunch?

Why should Amazon do the dirty work of breaking into the market? They'll let these tiny apps compete against each other, fight for the customers, until ordering groceries on the app it comes the norm, and then they'll buy them all out.

Didnít realize DoorDash sells their own groceries.

Amazon has Fresh with longer time for deliveries, and fees/minimums, itís a different offering (think Amazon is e-grocery instead of a trip to the shop to buy several days worth of groceries, vs. Iím in the mood of ice cream (or another snack) and canít be bothered to head out.

Interesting theory, though itíll cost Amazon more money that way, and risk that someone else snatches the carpet out under them when the leader in this field goes public or gets sold to someone else.

They could always just beat the market with the pricing...
The only way these small companies could survive is with the high markup.. with just a bit of price slashing, Amazon (or Uber for that matter) can wipe them out in no time

Thatís the kinda stuff Iíd expect from Amazon at this point in the game. Much harder once they build up brand recognition/market share

It's interesting the two different styles that exist, I'm curious which one will last longer.

They cater to different audiences/use-cases, if anything the same company can do both (but probably out of different locations)

My understanding is those with 10-15 minute delivery are paying workers per hour, they aren't independent contractors, and are proud of that, vs the 30-45 minute uber style ones.
Generally, I'd assume most people would prefer to wait an extra 15 minutes for a cheaper order with a greater selection.

Those werenít the same ďtwoĒ discussed upthread.

Delivery is free with these hypoerlocal 15-20m services (despite the packers and delivery-people being paid employees), and prices are relatively reasonable.

Delivery (or whatever their service fees are) is costly with messenger/delivery services (like Uber/UberEats) and I found that they also charge retailers a percentage so you see prices marked up.

Go on FridgeNoMore and theyíll delivery you a can of coke for $0.99 with no fees (if you elect not to tip), find me an messenger/delivery-type service where the single item is that cheap, let alone the delivery fees.

Getir rapid delivery

Does anyone use Getir delivery in Chicago or NY? Seems similar to gopuff but they have coupons for $25 off purchases of $25.02 or other crazy discounts
Between family members we've bought about $80 worth of convenience store items for less than $15

Welcome to the forums. Please share more details on the crazy discounts.

I'm merging this thread to competing companies with this business model.
