Also, the time is the same--you're spending 3-4 hours on the date. What diff does it make how much of that is in the car?
And an hour and a half in the lounge is plenty enough.
How do those statements coexist?

Drive time doesn't (usually) count towards expected/accepted date time. So if you're going to need to be in the lounge (or wherever) for an hour and a half, shorter driving time means shorter date.

Ooops, maybe that's why it took me so long to get married. I always counted from pick-up to drop-off.

Still, I'm glad, because I like my wife much much better than the others.

Which reminds me of the time I went out with a girl who so horrified me (in hashkafa), that when I realized at the beginning of the date that I got off at the wrong exit onto another highway, with no exit for 30 miles and there was no way I was going to spend all that extra time with her, I decided to take a uturn in one of the police crossovers. The first was occupied (by a cop), so I kept driving to the next one, ripped a u-ee and headed to our destination. And still had to entertain her for the requisite time before taking her home.

What is your "requisite time", and where did you get the notion that time in the car doesn't count?

Knowing the tricks of the trade didn't quite shorten my dating experience. It did help me find my wife though. I got passed around from one girl to her friend to another (with a few others in between) and so on ending in my wife

What is your "requisite time"
First date: 1.5 - 2 hours at the location, 2.5 - 3 hours total. This is a lechatchila minimum. Extenuating circumstances may vary. It shouldn't be much longer either - first dates are mostly to see if you want a second one. FME, girls appreciate first dates on the shorter side.

where did you get the notion that time in the car doesn't count?
Much experience. Talking to people. Mostly just experience. Many many dates with many many girls.

It's also a s'vara. You're going out on a date. If you get stuck in traffic, you're not going to turn around when you get there just because you were together already for two hours.

well its just common sense...hard to believe that someone would think a first date should be 2.5-3 hrs not including the drive....that would be torturing a girl...

Not necessarily. But in this instance, yes. Not just by my own assessment.

He was making a joke, something you seem to have trouble recognizing. So is it you vast experience of dating so many girls that makes you feel like it's okay to talk down to people on this thread, or some other grand dating guru qualification you haven't mentioned yet?

The people who are married think they're experts on how to get married. But they've only done it once.

The people who date a lot think they're experts on dating. But they've never done it successfully.

i.e. The expert dater is clearly he/she who has been married many times. That does make sense, as obviously that person is an amazing dater if people keep on agreeing to marry them, but just stay away from their marriage advice.
