Furnishing a House/Apartment

Hi,
I haven't seen a thread for this. If there is please point me there.
Until now I've been living in a fully furnished apartment. I'm now moving into an unfurnished one. I would love to hear the advice of people who have gone the process. What brands are recommended for furniture and appliances, how risky is it to buy furniture online without seeing it/ trying it out in person and general tips that someone who never experienced it would never know.

Craigslist - they have a decent amount of furniture in their "free" section, and they have some good used furniture as well. My original bedroom set when I got married was purchased used from there.

Bookshelves, tables, cribs, breakfronts, beds (even if you don't want to risk mattresses, you can get the bedframes), dressers.

Depends what you get, how much you spend there, and what you're expecting to get out of it. Another option is real used furniture stores like Habitat For Humanity. It all depends on what your budget is really.

I've done it many times and Ikea is always a simple and easy experience. You can order everything you can think of in a few hours, delivered and assembled a few days later. You can walk out with mattresses and folding chair to use in the interim. If you want some nicer pieces, look at Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, Potery Barn, West Elm, & etc.
