Assuming you're going to the EU, the best deal might just be taking the money out of an ATM in the country you're visiting (couple hundred per withdrawal).
Before I visited Venice earlier this year, I check with Chase, BOFA, AMEX and possibly others and wasn't happy with their exchange rates. So I ended up taking out a few hundred euro from an ATM in Milan and I got a better exchange rate that way even with the ATM fees.

Banks offer not great exchange rates. I was hoping someone knew of an exchange place that would offer a better rate than the bank

Would a service like Transferwise.com work for you?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Chase branches accept foreign currency deposits at an OK exchange rate with no fees.

I've used Transferwise.com to send money from NY to Australia. Had good experience and better rates than paypal.

I once withdrew euro & deposited them back 2 weeks later. Wasn't so happy with their rate

I just looked it up online, this is really amazing! I'm really surprised that I didn't know about it. Look it up on Wikipedia they have tens of millions of $ investments from famous billionaires and they're rated one of the best startups. Thanks for letting me know about it.

did you use a CC or straight through your checking account?I'd like to send money to Belgium from the US and it says if I use my cc they don't charge any fee but the card issuer would. Any idea what that charge is? Cash advance? Anyway to avoid it?

It most definitely will post as a cash advance.

Correct, but their rates are much worse than banks.
