Won a contest, but they won't honor win
« on: August 24, 2020, 03:31:28 PM »
So it's a bit of a tale but January/February time,  the company my brother worked for made an internal contest for its employees to nominate a student to win a refurbished laptop or desktop computer because they were getting rid of their current stock and getting new equipment.  My brother contacted the people in charge to see if he could nominate his non-local nieces and they gave him the go-ahead. My two daughters entered and the company contacted my brother at the end of February and told him my older daughter had won a desktop so he sent them our address for them to mail her prize.  It never came and I forgot about it due to covid.  In the meanwhile, my brother was laid off from the company during covid.
Skip forward to today - it popped up in my head with my daughter heading back to school that she would definitely benefit from the refurbished computer. I reached out to the people my brother told me to reach out to in the company inquiring after her prize, with communicating understanding about the delivery delay due to covid. I quickly recieved an answer back that the prize distribution was indeed delayed due to covid.  Then they said that my brother needed to be employed with the company at the time of the prize distribution.  I answered back that he was employed at the time of her win and when the prize should have been distributed, but they disagreed that those were the terms and said my daughter was no longer eligible. I asked for the terms that were established when the contest was put on and they replied there were no official terms but it was just an informal company contest.
So I'm wondering, as I have the letter that states she won a desktop computer from them, is there anything I can do to claim the prize? The person I was communicating with closed the conversation with a sorry, can't help you, thanks for reaching out.

Attorney general complaint or small claims court
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

A refurbished computer is worth maybe $250.

If it was a contest where my daughter won $250, I'd want to pursue it.  ::)

Add another $30 approx. for the new office software (assuming @Sandy meant Microsoft Office?). Anyone know if the CFPB might be of help or are they exclusively for financial issues?

This sounds like an employment issue, not the CFPB
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

yes state attorney general is an excellent place to start- or if their business is on the BBB you can try that as well.
