he probably meant terabyte.

The better question is, HDD OR SSD.

Is it worth splurging on the SSD versus the HDD?

I believe I still got a 3gb one somewhere😂 (from a windows 95 PC!)

Meant TB,

whats the definition of HDD-SSD ?
HDD = Hard Disk Drive, there's a spinning disk
SSD = Solid State Drive, memory is stored without moving parts (like a USB)
Most people say SSD will last longer, while some people say the opposite.
SSD are generally faster and are recommended for a boot drive.

Thanx
what are most portable one's ? or do they come in both types.

Id imagine the less thigs that can move around the less chances of something going wrong

Also, SSD is a lot more expensive...

As they say in America, you pay for what you get for.

Yes in most scenerios SSD is better than HDD.

I think that more important than the brand is what case you buy and how you handle it. Most brands will work perfectly if you handle it carefully. If you drop it, I think any brand is subject to breaking and memory loss.

I have an old Seagate 1 th which still has to be plugged in to the wall, wasn't dropped or anything just suddenly stopped working. That's why I asked if any one is recommended over others.

dunno about longevity, but years ago @DH Data Recovery has commented on which builds (and brands) are easier and cheaper to recover data from once they do inevitably die. But I don't know if the info is still current

The real answer for your question is, that you shouldn't buy a 3-4TB hard drive.

All the 4TB portable hard drives use SMR technology, which is very unreliable and hard to recover.

Stay away from Seagate.

The only options remaining is WD or Toshiba 2 TB or less.

BTW I'm doing data recovery full time.

My BILs external died (just clicks and says requires a format). If you can recommend any tools (free or not) i would really appreciate it.

I am fairly handy, so even a dissasembly/remounting of platters is an option if u recommend that route.

If the data is important stay away, if not I can try to guide you how to diagnose it and what to do.
