thanx, is that specific to 4 tb or anything bigger than 2tb ?
3TB are usually 2nd of 4tb, so it could be worse.

The real answer for your question is, that you shouldn't buy a 3-4TB hard drive.

All the 4TB portable hard drives use SMR technology, which is very unreliable and hard to recover.

Stay away from Seagate.

The only options remaining is WD or Toshiba 2 TB or less.

BTW I'm doing data recovery full time.
I understand this is your job, but do have any source other then experience?
(I've heard from people working at data recovery the exact opposite, to stay away from WD and get Seagate)

What is the model number?

Dose the drive spin up, spin down?

Put the drive to your ear when you plug it in, and describe exactly what you hear.

Within 5 years
I wasn't in the line 5 years ago, but in the last few years Seagate drives are bad.

Are you in the IT industry? Which drives do you see failing more?

I mostly get requests from friends, I have only seen one failed seagate drive to date. I've seen mostly WD (doesn't necessarily mean much because they are generally more commonly bought) and some others.

Most of us aren't using our portable hard drives as servers, so this information is interesting yet useless.

It does confirm that you should stay away from Seagate as mentioned upthread.

You can't eliminate a company's one product, because the other may be bad🧐

Remove the drive from the enclosure, and connect it to a SATA wire.

You will see the model number on the drive, and let me know if you hear a faint beeping noise.

Yes. The top should separate from the actual drive, allowing you to plug the drive into the computer directly
