He wants to do it himself, there is a chance that it's just the enclosure.
@Square do you think it's worth buying a cable just to diagnose? (Chances are it won't fix anything)
Hi,firstly thanx for your help till here,  i didnt get around to testing my hard drive till now.
i bought the sabrent sata drive, first time i plugged in the hard drive to test it, it showed up properly and worked for the few minutes i tried it, but now its not showing up anymore.
I tried through disk management and it shows up there but says disk not intialized,
Whats the next step should i intialize it or is that like formatting which will wipe the data ?

Plug in the hard drive and listen very carefully how it sounds, and describe it here, or maybe you can record it and attach it.

What is the exact model of the drive?

Go to administrative tools > computer management > disk management (dunno what the equivalent in dumbed down Metro settings is called) and see if you can see the disk. It’s possible that all you need to do is assign a different drive letter and it’ll work.

This drive doesn't make a faint sound when starting.

Put your ear to it before plugging it in, and listen to start sequence.

Cheapest (if it can be called that way...) is probably the Crucial X6 for $187.99.

Newer/more popular/brtand name ones are SanDisk Extreme ($298.70), SAMSUNG T7 Portable ($299).

thanks!

Would it be fair to say that the crucial compromises 'longevity' or durability?
(or is brand name =durability only on the smaller cards)?

Samsung T5 would be similar durability to the T7 but at slower read/write speed? (few bucks less)

(and for someone coming from a HDD, using it on an older /slower win7 computer, would that speed difference be relevant)?

Unfortunately, I do not think your questions have definitive answers (I certainly do not know them.)

so what would be the benefit of the S over crucial?
