Neuralink
« on: August 29, 2020, 09:54:32 PM »

I wonder how much this will affect the future.

Can it stop neurons from firing or only activate neurons?

Will there be any halachic implications besides for maybe elective surgery?

You beat me to it, I was gonna start a thread;)
It seems like it should be able to detect the movement of nearby neurons and should be able to detect it, but not to block it. Perhaps they can counter it with firing counter measures (whatever that's supposed to mean).
Seems to me it will be a long way for halachic approval, I'd assume it would be easier for medical reasons.

Why would it be problematic halachically?

It's a permanent modification of the body, they take a piece of skull out.

"Modification of the body"? It's more like when you take out your Kidney or Appendix or even when you do a root canal...

Taking out a kidney when it fails is definitely a modification of one's body. This is cutting a piece of skull out for beauty purposes, as a convenient place to store the chip, and is totally not necessary for it to work.

Correct, but the skull isn't really an organ doing body functions. So drilling the tooth root (bone connected to the skull...) to put in an implant/root canal it's not less "modifying" then this is.

Good point. I guess then it would be more a question of unnecessary pain. (which can be easily debunked since that's the only option for now 🤷‍♂️) then there's also the actual rest of it, I think it's definitely going to be a discussion.

The other issue thing that came to mind is foreign things in the body. Before kevurah, do they have to be removed?
How does it work with pacemakers?

According to Elon it's easily removable.

How does it work with shabbos, if there's no medical need for it?

We're assuming for now there is a medical need, if there isn't then there's bigger issues then Shabbos I believe.. (you can always just turn it off)

Kind of interesting how charging is wirelessly, so people will have a wire magnetically attached to their heads overnight, like what if it falls off?

If they're referring to this https://gazettereview.com/2015/07/ionic-ear-update-see-what-happened-after-shark-tank/

I think it's just a regular bluetooth piece that's implanted in the ear.

Theoretically a lot. Realistically is yet to be seen.

I guess in short anything that there's a broken connection between body and brain. For example blindness you'd be able to directly input an image to the brain so a blind person will be able to see.

Paralyzed people. Memory loss. Basically a lot of things

Those are all input applications but I think it was mentioned that somehow this will also be able to upload all your memories to the cloud so you can make a copy of your brain. Something like that.
