"Yiddish Double Entendre" names
« on: September 03, 2020, 01:29:30 PM »
A few weeks ago, there was a thread where someone asked about how to spell a certain name in Hebrew. That thread devolved into a discussion of various Hebrew names, and I asked a question about the "Yiddish Double Entendre" and it's sources, but didn't get an answer. Figured I'd give it a shot to ask again.

What do I mean by "Yiddish Double Entendre": People who have a Hebrew and Yiddish name that essentially mean the same thing:
Menchem Mendel
Yitzchok Azik
Nosson Nuta
Aryeh Leib
Kalonimus Kalman (although Kalonimus isn't hebrew)
Tzvi Hersh
Dov Ber

My questions:
- When and why did this start?
- How come it's for some names and not others? (For example, I've never met someone named Mordechai Mottel, or Yaakov Yankel)
- Are there any examples of women's names that fit this pattern?

There is a bikshu rachamim for Pittsburgh Rebbe and it does have this. Haven't seen it elsewhere.

Isn't this the opposite of a double entendre?

Yes - I'm not sure why I came up with that name - I wonder if there is a better way of phrasing that.

Yitchok = Azik = Isaac

I know many people who are just "Menachem" (i.e. not Menachem Mendel) and are referred to as Mendy or Mendel - including some relatives.

It's kind of the same - I could probably come up with other examples, but are you simply suggesting it as a possibility or do you actually know people named Tzipora Faiga?

I know at least one Tzvi who goes by Heshy

This is probably the answer to your question in the OP.

- When and why did this start?

If someone named their kid after a person whose name was Menachem, but was called Mendel, they would give both names to honor the person.
