A few weeks ago, there was a thread where someone asked about how to spell a certain name in Hebrew. That thread devolved into a discussion of various Hebrew names, and I asked a question about the "Yiddish Double Entendre" and it's sources, but didn't get an answer. Figured I'd give it a shot to ask again.
What do I mean by "Yiddish Double Entendre": People who have a Hebrew and Yiddish name that essentially mean the same thing:
Menchem Mendel
Yitzchok Azik
Nosson Nuta
Aryeh Leib
Kalonimus Kalman (although Kalonimus isn't hebrew)
Tzvi Hersh
Dov Ber
My questions:
- When and why did this start?
- How come it's for some names and not others? (For example, I've never met someone named Mordechai Mottel, or Yaakov Yankel)
- Are there any examples of women's names that fit this pattern?
