At what point (after how long in that city) is it considered a stopover and not a connection?

 4 hours

4 hours
It's possible that ANA might have different rules.

As far as CO/UA/US is concerned the max connection time on a domestic ticket is 4 hours or the next possible flight if there is no connection within 4 hours.
On an international ticket the max connection time is 24 hours.

I'm not sure if ANA has a 4 hour or 24 hour rule for US connections.

Then although Canada isnt the US, alot of Carriers dont consider it as an Intl destination in regards to its T&Cs, as well as Mexico . It gets bundled in as North America

The question is how does ANA regard Canada as the US Carriers do or as an Intl destination and will they allow a connection up to 24 hrs in either direction in the US going to or returning from Canada. I have no idea

once the agent @ AMEX hits the send button , the miles are immediately in your acct. UA isnt a partner with MR so you could only transfer to CO from Amex.

SPG I have no idea I never transferred into miles

As for the merge it shouldnt be a problem if they in fact do merge (should know probably tommorrow with another CO Board meeting) then their Programs will merge into 1 probably UAs as that will be the name of the existing Carrier. If everything will remain as UA has it today with its program is anyones guess right now.

AMEX or SPG to ANA can take from a few days to 2 weeks.

Ive moved to a few US Carriers and when I checked once I hung up ,bingo the miles were already posted. So is it when transferring to non-US carriers it takes longer? or is it just with ANA. From Amex MR

I know from reports on this forum that AMEX to ANA is not instant.
I know that AMEX to BA, CO, DL, and Alitalia are instant.
Dunno about the rest.

still out of it can you please point me to where there are posts that say AMEX to ANA takes time.Theres plenty of SPG to ANA reports but I didnt see when I Quickly ran thru this thread any AMEX to ANA

AMEX to ANA is 1:1 , SPG gives you a bonus Miles wise so its better then 1:1 true some people might have MR pts and it will still save them a few miles by going the ANA route, but it seems most people are talking about Transferring from SPG to ANA and not from AMEX

I was actually going to transfer Amex to ANA because i want to save my spg. Does anyone have an actual report on how long it takes?

FYI- i called ANA regarding taxes on:
ORD-YYZ-YOW on AC and returning YOW-DCA-ORD on AC and UA and it was like $100 in taxes and fees.

ORD-EWR-YOW CO and returning YOW-DCA-ORD on AC and UA was around $75 in taxes and fees.

"No stopovers...within the country of origin are permitted on international routes."

But otherwise yes, for a domestic ticket under 4,000 total miles it seems that 4 stopovers are allowed for just 22,000 miles, quite the bargain!

But theoretically, it would work from Canada to the US, no?

I had to dig it up, it was actually from a site comment:

It should based on my reading of the rules, but you'd have to call to confirm.

Ok, i have a stupid question:

So would it work from ORD-YYZ-YOW as departure and returning YOW-DCA (stopover for 1 night in DCA) then to ORD?

My stopover would be in DCA....Is my country of origin USA because my outbound trip started there? Or is it Canada because my return trip starts there?

Yes, your origin would be the usa, and this routing should be an acceptable one (I'm learning a kal vachomer, from zigzag trips I took on one award).

Aeroplan transfers are also instant.

If my country of origin is in the USA, it would not work...based on this: No stopovers...within the country of origin are permitted on international routes

Update: I transferred Amex to ANA this past friday on 4/30/10 and it is in my account already this morning 5/2/10. Thats pretty quick considering it hasnt even been 1 business day...

Not bad, so it seems AMEX MR goes pretty much instantly, while SPG can take time. remember its not AMEX SPG to ....  (whatever Carrier) but SPG to whatever Carrier.

a person isnt transferring from their AMEX SPG acct but from their SPG acct. While with the reg MR accts its AMEX doing the transferring
