There are some people who don't shop at Costco often enough to make membership worthwhile, but would still want to shop there occasionally. There is a way to do that with their gift cards aka Costco Cash. Now, if you have friends IRL who have membership you can just

In my experience it seems you will always need a supervisor to override the system when using a Costco cash card.

Before I got my own membership I was using GC and they were never able to use it on their own with out a supervisor.

Indeed.

Came in handy when there was limits on select items and I went shopping with others. Each family member would use a card.

And keep a stash of them avlb in case someone wants to go to Costco or I need someone to go for me.

Its also a good backup when using your cousins/neighbors/grandmothers card. In case they call you out on it, have the gift card in your hand so you can say that the gc allows you to shop.

Another point though, i don’t believe you get the sales when paying as a non-member. Can anyone confirm otherwise

It's been a while so I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I think sometimes I managed to get it without calling anyone. It could be I was zoche to a supervisor as the cashier or that I'm remembering incorrectly.
Either way, it's more than sometimes, so I stand corrected.

One more important point.
Returns need to be done by the account holder. Using your receipt. A GC alone can't make returns.

I’m pretty sure they will allow the return if its to be refunded back to a gift card

IIRC, you don't need to show a membership card if you have the receipt. They can give you a GC, Cash, or return to any Visa card.

Had an issue once with doing a return without member present. They reluctantly let me return for gift card but refused to return to my visa.

He can return for you with your receipt.
