Married couples with two cars, how do you roll?
« on: September 15, 2020, 09:18:41 AM »
I've seen both done. Wondering what people do and why they do it.

Regarding the second option, I presume most people don't invest into two nice cars, so the second one is only used when there's a conflict of sorts.

Arrange an accident between the two and get a hefty insurance payout...  :P

Family car/minivan vs. regular car.

I would believe that’s option 2, no?

No, whoever is doing carpool takes the minivan while the other spouse drives the car. Can vary throughout the week.

In the minivan case, which car would you take when there’s no carpool and they’re both in the driveway?

We have a newer minivan and an older Civic. The minivan is the family car and DW's primary. We use both interchangeably when there's nothing on the schedule and it's for short-term local driving. Otherwise, whoever has the kids has the van, just in case.

I would think that complicates the abstract question. Of course it’s important that the car be big enough, but all things equal, which car would you take?

I know people who drive their minivans to shul every morning because their second sedan isn’t so great.

Personally, I try to keep the wear and tear off of my minivan as much as possible. The junker can get the abuse.

I can't imagine any car is so amazing that I'd be willing to rearrange the car seat configuration based on who is going in the car.

No contest between the two cars parked in the driveway absent a reason to use a specific one.
