Cross Country Road Trip
« on: December 03, 2011, 06:42:40 PM »
My wife and I are considering driving from NJ-->LA this summer. Has anyone done a similar trip or have any insight?

When I went straight (well, straight-ish) cross country I left NY Motzei Shabbos, didn't stop until hitting South Dakota late Sun. night and spent the rest of the week taking the scenic route from there to Cali...

Anything I cared to see between NY & Chicago I had already seen & once you pass Chicago there's nothing until the western end of SD. (That's if you take a northern detour like I did, if you go direct there's nothing until Colorado when you hit the Rockies)

Does anybody know of anything kid friendly to do along (or close to) the 80 in Wyoming?
My original plan was to to do something like NY -> ORD / MKE -> DEN -> Bryce / Zion -> maybe Vegas -> LAX -> SFO but now it looks like I might need to cut out the LAX part and go straight to SFO, so I kinda need to find something to do somewhere in Wyoming...

Very touristy state. Only 600k residents IIRC.

There should be somewhere there with no legal jurisdiction so go ahead and sell all your miles from there.

(I don't remember exact details, but something to the tune of a federal park only being subject to federal courts, the court has to be in the same jurisdicition as the park, but the park crosses state lines, so the court has no jurisdiction over that section of the park.)

If he is taking a road trip, chances are he has no miles or already sold them.

I know. I've been there a couple of times. for example:

My point was

Maybe he just likes a good road trip?

I've done the trip twice. It all depends on how much time you want to spend traveling.

The best advice i can offer is NOT to waste your time on the east coast. Get over the Mississippi and check out the national parks etc. The west puts the east to shame ( Nashville is pretty cool though)

These are the two routes I've taken

NY> Niagara > Cleveland> Chicago>Postville (Shabbos)>SD Badlands/Rushmore>Yellowstone/Teton>Grand Canyon>Vegas>LA

NY>Shenandoah>Nashville>St. Louis > KC>Rockies/Denver (Shabbos)> Arches/Bryce/Zion> Vegas> LA

Ok, so I looked at it a little closer and you guys are right. It's not terribly out of the way to go up to Yellowstone. I don't know what I was thinking...
OTOH, It's not too far out of the way to go to Bryce / Zion etc. even if I'm going to SFO, not LAX. and I'd rather finally do that instead of doing Badlands / Mt. Rushmore > Yellowstone / Teton again (not that I don't want to go back again, but I'd rather knock some other things off the bucket list)

You can go to Rockies>Utah national Parks if you don't want to go to Wyoming again or

Have you ever done northern California? Yosemite, Crater Lake (Oregon), Lake Tahoe etc

Been to NorCal many times.  +I'll be there for like 2 months now...

Crater lake is too far out of the way for this trip. (assuming I do Colorado / Utah.) For the way back I'm considering heading up to Banff, maybe I'll stop there then...

What? If you're eating fish that means you've run out of meat...

Hats off to whYME for going on a road trip with kids (? Or are you that lucky?).
Enjoy it brother!

Since when are miles illegal to sell other than in Utah?

'twas a joke.

Once we're at it, anyone know what this thing with Utah is?

I believe its influenced by the Mormons.
I also heard that they have a law there that any alcohol served in any establishment, the bottle has a measuring device on it and that way the govt can track how much alcohol is being sold.

I meant to ask why conventional wisdom is that its illegal to sell miles in Utah?
