RBG DDF shortlist and how it will shape the Elections
« on: September 20, 2020, 08:49:43 PM »
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the court’s second female justice, died minutes before the start of Rosh Hashanah at her home in Washington. She was 87, and died of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Her death just over six weeks before Election Day is likely to set off a heated battle over whether President Trump should nominate, and the Republican-led Senate should confirm, her replacement, or if the seat should remain vacant until the outcome of his race against Democrat Joe Biden is known.

As expected, two Republican Senators, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine have released statements that they would not support taking up a potential nomination before the Presidential election is held.

"I want you to use my words against me. If there's a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let's let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination."

Why "as expected"?

I think the Dems are going to win this one. Dem donors are very motivated these days. Murkowski and Collins are already Nay, Romney will for sure be Nay. The Dems need to find only 1 more contested senator to pay off somehow whereas the GOP would need to match support to all of them.

On a thread titled "RBG DDF shortlist and how it will shape the Elections," we should probably talk about that part as well...

Frontrunner is probably Amy Coney Barrett, who was on the top-5 list last time. The only difference now is that it's right before the election, so Trump may want to pick someone who will help win his a specific demographic.

Would be the first Supreme Court Justice not from Harvard/Yale/Stanford Law School (Top 3) appointed in the past 45 years.

Is it really a win though? Might be in Trump's best interest to have this issue open on election day.

For the dems it definitely is. This way they at least have a chance.

A chance at SCOTUS but maybe less of a chance at POTUS.

I imagine there's a demographic that would not vote for Trump but for the SCOTUS issue. Pro life suburban women?

Like I said -1...

They never said they would vote nay if someone's name was nominated. Just that they oppose the idea of it happening.

Right now, I believe every justice (alive) attended Harvard or Yale. I think RBG was the only Stanford alum on the court...

ETA: Actually, RBG studied in Cornell and Harvard...
